This stuff happens all the time.

We've had it happen before in Thailand... twice I think.

We've also been affected at another vendor conference with volcanos
disrupting flights.

The world is an unstable place and these things happen.  Countries that
were once very dangerous to travel to, like Sri Lanka, are now fine and
safe... and ones that were safe, are now not, do to disasters, terrorism
like ISIS, and other reasons.

We just have to go with the flow and move our events accordingly.  Every
APNIC event should be planned with a backup in mind... it is just good
planning sense.
