Greetings from the APNIC Foundation! I’m pleased to share the Foundation’s 2023 Annual Report with you. The Annual Report covers all the initiatives that commenced in 2023 and provides snapshots of continuing projects - a combined total of 68 projects launched or were underway during the year.
On the front cover you will see a balloon that has Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) installed. This is part of a project by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to bring connectivity to indigenous communities around Chini Lake. These communities didn’t have the connectivity necessary to use IoT flood warning sensors and the ground was too swampy to build towers. The balloon became an innovative – and practical – solution. This was exactly the kind of affordable and innovative mix of low-tech, high-tech and good old-fashioned ingenuity that the Foundation’s Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF Asia) seeks to support, and has been for the past 15 years. The Annual Report covers a variety of initiatives - such as efforts to connect and educate schools in Samoa (page 9), upskilling and empowering women and gender diverse people in the technical sector in Southeast Asia (page 12) and fostering cybersecurity efforts in Sri Lanka (page 15). They’re diverse, yet they all share the goals of fostering an open, stable, secure Internet that is affordable and accessible for our Asia Pacific people. I hope you enjoy reading about our work – as much as the Foundation Team did in supporting and bringing these efforts to life.
