This would be better directed at Apple. They do not allow programs to
run in the "background" on the iPhone, you have to keep them open or
they cannot do anything. Their own built-in apps like SMS and Calendar
are exceptions. They are claiming a new feature to support background
"messages" for some apps is coming but the took it out of the new 2.1
firmware before it was released. Hopefully it will come back soon, it
will make things from reminders to instant messengers and chat clients
much more useful than they already are!
