Thanks for writing in. Intermittent network connectivity is one of the primary reasons sync-at-startup may not be for everyone (and why it's configurable in Todo's settings). Many users, including myself, choose to sync manually just so we have control of when it happens. In terms of why Edge/3G wouldn't work as well, it probably depends on your location and availability of network coverage. There are certain places in my own home that I've learned that 3G basically won't work. We'd recommend that you turn off sync at startup so you'd better be able to control when to synchronize.
