The online ToDo subscription is to enable automatic syncing of tasks between devices, and also serves as a backup of your items. The Desktop version, as far as I know, does not offer this Internet/cloud based sync on it's on. It is just a native desktop application for Mac OS X instead of having to use the web browser.
Also, the web version allows you to access your ToDo items from ANY device whether you have the app installed or not… just from a web browser. So the online subscription has its benefits. You just have to decide if those benefits are worth it to you. To have all devices in sync, it sounds like it is worth it to you.
