Notice of Several Meeting Options

CCE Commercial Fruit Program Thinning Meetings for 2010:

Expanded options regarding possible thinning timing choices (bloom, petal fall, traditional 10 -13 mm, and combinations thereof), and the variability of bloom and fruit development progression over our large NE Regional range, means that no one time and location best fits all circumstances.

With this in mind, the CCE NENYF Program is posting information of petal fall and thinning meetings along the Hudson River Valley - Lake Champlain corridor and invite growers to choose and attend the one (or more) that best fits their plans. Please plan to fellow growers us Hudson, Burnt Hills, or Peru at one of these upcoming field meetings scheduled for commercial apple producers.

Our meetings will primarily have horticulture and thinning issues focus, but also disease and / or pest management pointers appropriate to the timing. Participating Cornell Researchers at one or more of these sessions will include Steve Hoying, Peter Jentsch, David Rosenberger, Terence Robinson, and perhaps others as their schedules may allow. Hope to see you make one these sessions.

Notice of Extension Event:

A Top-Working Grafting Workshop
With Steve Hoying, Senior Extension Associate
Cornell Department of Horticultural Sciences, Highland, NY
At
Gunnison's Lake Shore Orchard
3196 NYS Routes 9N and 22, Crown Point, NY 12928-2400
9:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 12

Have a relatively orchard block of nicely spaced trees, on well-spaced, productive rootstock that you are pretty well please with but for one thing - it is pumping out the wrong cultivar? And replanting this block, at this time, just is not in your plants. What might you do instead? How about top-working the block over to a more suitable variety?

Top working has become a common approach for changing over to more profitable varieties. And though a popular practice, there are substantial risks and costs involved, and you need to know what you are doing. That is the purpose of this workshop, and we are at the optimal point of the season to demonstrate the techniques. So join us for this informative session at Gunnison's Lake Shore Orchard.

Directions: Gunnison's Lake Shore Orchard:

If coming via the Northway (I-87): From the North: Travel to Exit 31 for Willsboro, and continue on 9N and then 9N and 22 south through Westport and Port Kent to Crown Point. Gunnison's Storage is on the east side of 9N & 22 about 1 mile south of Bridge Road. From the South: Travel to exit 29 for NY route 74 East to Ticonderoga. At junction with NYS 9N and 22, turn left and proceed north on 9N and 22 through Crown Point and on about 1 mile to Gunnison's Storage.

If coming from VT, note that the Bridge between Crown Point, NY and Chimney Point, VT is gone. However, interim ferry service is available. The ferry operates year-round, 24 hours a day, at no charge to the public. Currently, the ferry is scheduled to depart from Chimney Point on the hour and half hour and depart from New York at 15 and 45 after each hour. No trucks over legal weight. Maximum vehicle width is 16 feet. For regulations and restrictions and further information, see the Lake Champlain Transportation Company site at http://www.ferries.com/temporary_schedule.asp.
