Dr. Parmar,

The meeting is once per year, usually near August 1.  It meets in conjunction with the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS), so it moves throughout the US.  The American Pomological Society Meeting is in two parts, the Executive Board (of which the editor is a member) meeting ( a total of 2 hours) and the full business meeting (usually with some type of speaking program attached, a total of 2 hours).  The two meetings are often the same day or consecutive days.  Generally, the total cost of the meeting, including US travel, is between $1000 and $1500, but that usually includes the registration and longer stay for the ASHS meetings.  Additional compensation to allow full coverage of travel from India may be difficult for the organization, but it would be an appropriate negotiating point if you were offered the position.

I hope that this answers your questions, but if not, don't hesitate to contact me again.

My dear Dr. Autio,

I am greatly pleased to learn that the position is open for foreigners too.

Before submitting my application, I would like to know about the Annual Meeting which the editor is supposed to attend.  I shall be grateful if you could kindly provide me the following information:
  • Is the meeting held once in a year or more than once.
  • What is the duration of the meeting.
  • How much will it cost for boarding, lodging, local travel (as I shall not be having my own car) during the meeting.  I had sent you one more mail in which I had stated I could bear the cost of my return air ticket from India to the JFK Airport.  I have visited USA many times in the past and I know how expensive is it there for we Indians due to a very high cost of US dollar here.  Will the 2000 dollars that the APS provides for travel be enough for meeting the entire cost of my travel from New York to the venue of meeting (air ticket, hotel, sometimes local travel between JFK and Liberty Airports, travel from New York to the Venue of the meeting, cost of stay and local travel at the meeting venue, travel from meeting venue to JFK Airport, other incidental and unforeseen expenses).
If it is not enough, will there be some way of compensating me for the additional expenses?

I had attended the annual meeting of the North Indian Fruit Explorers (NAFEX) at Columbia Missouri four years back.  They had paid for all my expenses after I had landed at JFK.  There was a lot of bonus too.  Mr. Jerry Lehman, NAFEX President, brought me to his home at Tera Haute.  I was with them for three days and it was a great experience.  Then Barbara, Jerry's wife, drove me to Indianapolis airport for catching my next flight.  Well I do not expect so much, but I should be able to meet my expenses comfortably. Please remember that I shall be spending minimum US$2000 for my travel from home to JFK Airport and back.

So please advise me.

After hearing back from you, I shall submit my formal application.

I am very confident that I shall be able to do the job VERY WELL.  I know your journal.  I had published few papers in some Himalayan wild growing fruits in it about 20 years back when I was employed by the University of Horticulture at Solan.

With best regards,

Very truly yours,

Dr. Parmar, I am sorry for the delay in responding to your question.  The position certainly is open to people from around the World.  All correspondence can be done with email.  It does, however, require attendance at the Annual Meeting (usually held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Horticultural Science). -- Wes

You can have a look at my CV at Fruitipedia.  Currently I am compiling Fruitipedia and working on a multi volume book, SOME VERY LITTLE KNOWN FRUITS OF THE WORLD.

I also keep writing articles on lesser known fruits in a couple of US magazines.

So please advise me.  If the possibilities are there, I shall submit my regular application.

Subject: Apple-Crop: American Pomological Society is searching for a new editor

I am sorry.  The links in the previous email that I sent did not work properly.  I hope that that these work.

The American Pomological Society is searching for a new editor for the Journal of the American Pomological Society.  The Journal is the most important output of our society, and therefore, the editor is likely the most important position.  We would very much like to find an enthusiastic individual with enough experience to take on this extremely important role.  If you are interested, please review the following documents:

A list of editorial duties, compensation, and approximate time commitment
http://people.umass.edu/autio/APS_Editor_duties_and_compensation.pdf

A draft agreement between the Editor and the Society
http://people.umass.edu/autio/APS_Editor_agreement.pdf

Interested applicants should email a letter of interest and an electronic version of their CV (condensed to include editorial experience primarily) to me ([email protected]) by July 19, 2010.  The Editorial Committee will review applications and make a recommendation to the APS Board at the Annual Meeting.

If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
