Hi, fellows!-Benjamin Madore
Last week I received a Mouse II and a Mouse II controller card for my //e (the mouse alone will work also in my //c). These were a couple piece of hardware I wanted from some time ago. I have some software in my collection (Beagle Bros' Double Plot, VersionSoft's MouseDesk and Apple's MousePaint), and I have allways liked the simplicity and elegance of mouse-driven user interfaces (windows, pop-up menus, dialogs, buttons...). Now I can have it in an Apple II, and better than that, I can show my friends what can be done with an 8-bit, 20-year-old machine.
The next step is clear: I'll have to write some software for the mouse. Just for the fun. In the last years I have been "intoxicated" by object-oriented and event-driven programming - some techiques that are very usefull when you have a processor capable of executing more than a billion instructions per second. I'll have to strip all but the essential and remember all the code optimization tricks to create an user interface that can be usable running in a BASIC interpreter with a 0.20 MIPs processor (I do like to write the main program in a high level language, and only some speed-critical routines in assembler). It really will be a fun task.
I'll keep you informed on what's going on with that project.
