I have a gigabyte drive on my IIGS (Way more than I think I could fill)
I partitioned it with GS/OS. A floppy with the SCSI driver (I think it's on by default) will work. I used 6.0.1. Use the Disk.Tools disk to formatt the drive with a few 32MB partitions... Stuff like System, Apps, Games, Music, Data, and then make a HFS vol with the rest of the disk. "HFS Data" is a good name (you can use spaces here).

I choose this way to keep the number of partitions down, and most GS/OS (and I think AppleWorks 5.0 on a IIGS) programs can use the HFS vol for data. If you're worried, don't use any spaces in the disk name. Booting up everything from IIGS mode automatically maps all the extra partitions around, pretty cool, really, but old ProDOS versions only see the first few partitions.

I believe the HFS driver can be used in System 5 to keep the annoying formatt dialog away. Find a later Apple High-speed or a RamFast to use and you're set!

I saw AppleWorks as a download before, one of the 4-5 versions. I'm not sure if it was legal or not, but I would bet dollars to doughnuts that if Scantron/QC would have had the license they would still sell it. It was an excelent program, and I would have loved to see an updated AWGS, even just to Iron out the bugs (and just maybe a check-as-you-type spell checker--I'd never need anyting else after that) but I believe demand was waining. I feel AppleWorks Classic is probably more productive anyway for writing--less distracting--then other programs. You can formatt it later in BeagleWrite (Which is free to download).

I know ProDOS won't see anything bigger than 30-32MB partitions, but GSOS (6.0.1) can see larger partitions. I have a 5.25 floppy with some kind of Apple SCSI Utilities on it, and previously had tried using it to put the drivers on the partitions (formattted it and partitioned on the PM9500), but couldn't get ASUtils to see the drive *and* copy/install the drivers onto the HD. Without the drivers on the 1.2GB Hard drive, GSOS doesn't see it and cannot install from a floppy - 3.5 or 5.25 (where my FST? - HD drivers - are).

That the Man in the Moon himself came down one night to drink his fill.
