After lurking for a while I decided after the recent post about getting DOS that
I'd run something by everyone.
A couple of years ago I got the urge, and bought a IIe system in order to wax
nostalgic over my early days in computing. But like the recent poster I had
drives, I had diskettes (found some used ones), but NO DOS. What to do?
Well, I used a PC-based Apple II emulator that could do cassette IO on the PC.
Then I wrote a quick basic program that basically peeked all of DOS and and
wrote out a string of data statements I could use to poke it back in. Then I
wrote this generated program a wave (or mp3) file using the cassette i/o of the
emulator. So now comes the interesting part... By just playing back the audio
file into the cassette-in of the Apple II and running the program, bingo - DOS!
Then a simple INIT and the disk becomes bootable and I now had a dos-enabled
machine.
So I thought I'd share this in case anyone wanted to try the trick themselves.
But more importantly I was wondering if there was enough demand for this sort of
thing that some site out there would want to host the mp3 file and instructions
on bootstrapping. It took a while to figure it all out and get it to work, but
anyone with an audio equipped PC should be able to just play the file into their
apple and go. I suppose you could even write it to a CD and play a CD-player
into the Apple and get it to work.
The best part is that this is exactly the kind of weird workarounds that made
the original Apple days so fun!
