There were two flavors of batteries for the GS, based on the motherboard design. Both can be found under the power supply: push the tabs on the end to disengage the PS from the case, and lift it up.

If the battery is soldered to the motherboard, it's an 01 model. Clip the leads close to the old battery and remove. Make sure you mark which lead was positive/negative. You can either CAREFULLY solder leads on a new battery (careful! Too much heat and a battery can explode on you!) or get a battery holder for the new battery (same size and voltage of course--Radio Shack still sells them) and attack the leads from the holder to the ones on the MB (These could be soldered.) A model 03 has a battery holder built on to it, so battery changes are a lot easier. :)
