AFAIK, the LCD is powered from the //c's video expansion port. In it there's a VCC line that allows a few miliamperes to be drawn from it, to feed the RF modulator or the LCD screen (both are very low-power devices). It's also done that way because the LCD screen plus a 12 V battery pack make the //c actually a portable machine - and it wouldn't make any sense having to power the screen from a 110/220 V. outlet when the rest of the computer runs off a battery.
