All,

OK, well, I did some more Googling, and found at least two documents that say the two drives in question are different.

First, there's http://www.mandrake.demon.co.uk/Apple/drives.html

It says of the Unidisk 5.25" Drive (A9M0104) and Apple 5.25" Drive (A9M0107):

"...From the outside, the Apple 5.25" drive appears to be a platinum cased Unidisk 5.25" drive. This confusion is repeated in many Apple technical documents.

Generally, the Unidisk 5.25" and Apple 5.25" drives are interchangable. However the Unidisk version requires -12V and cannot be used with the LC Apple IIe Workstation card."

Interesting. Then we go to http://www.apple2.org/A2WebRef/A2Reference03.html

It says:

"...NOTE:The Apple //c+, the ROM 03 IIgs and//e Emulation card require the Apple Platinum "AppleDisk 5.25" Drive. Model #A9M0107."

Combining the two sources, they suggest that the Rom03 GS requires a 5.25" drive that doesn't use -12V because the Workstation //e card and the Rom03 GS don't send -12V through their ports.

This makes no sense to me at all.

So, can anyone here tell me if they are personally using a beige Unidisk 5.25" Drive (A9M0104) on a Rom03 GS?

No, the 5.25 Unidisk drives are identical inside.
I'm not even sure there are 2 different colors.
Just some are discolored. I could be wrong.

: All,
:
: Thanks for the responses (which, BTW, I already knew about), but we're
: getting away from the original question, which is:
:
: As far as a Rom03 GS is concerned, is there any difference between a Beige
: UniDisk 5.25 drive and a Platinum Apple 5.25 drive?
:
: Again, note that I am speaking of 5.25" drives. NOT 3.5" drives.
:
: Thanks,
