Web censorship 'bypass' unveiled
A tool has been created capable of circumventing government censorship of the
web, according to researchers at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab
software. The free program, called psiphon, has been constructed to let
citizens of countries with restricted web access retrieve and display web pages
from anywhere.

us: Safeguarding children on the Internet outlined
It is a startling statistic: about 70 percent of worldwide Internet use is
pornography. Only 30 percent is non-sexual commerce. Sergeant Chris Dobratz -
of the Hutchinson Police Department and Minnesota Internet Crimes Against
Children task force - used this statistic during his public presentation on
Internet safety at the school auditorium last week.

us: Groups Urge Court to Give E-mail Full Constitutional Protection
Last week, CDT and the ACLU joined a friend-of-the-court brief written by the
Electronic Frontier Foundation, urging a federal appeals court to extend to
e-mail the same constitutional protection accorded to telephone calls and
regular mail. Remarkably, the constitutional status of e-mail has never been
decided, and the Justice Department claims that opened e-mail and older stored
e-mail can be obtained from service providers without a court order and without
notice to the e-mail user. In the case, Warshak v. U.S., a lower federal court
ruled that government agents could not force disclosure of email from a service
provider unless they provided the relevant subscriber notice and an opportunity
to object.

eu: Fighting spam, spyware and malicious software: Member States should do
better, says Commission
On 27 November the Commission called on all regulatory authorities and
stakeholders in Europe to step up the fight against spam, spyware and malicious
software. Despite existing EU legislation to outlaw spam in Europe, Europe
continues to suffer from illegal online activities from inside the EU and from
third countries, the Commission underlines in a new Communication. The
Communication stresses that although internet safety is on the political agenda
for some time, national authorities should step up their actions to prosecute
illegal online activities.
