us: Fight Over Google's 'Sponsored Links' Threatens Internet Free Speech
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) asked the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of
Appeals today to uphold an important ruling allowing anyone to purchase
Google's "sponsored links" tied to trademarks, arguing that the practice is
legal under trademark law and provides a vital means for online speakers to
connect with audiences on the Internet.

CHILD PROTECTION, FILTERING & CONTENT REGULATION

uk: Worlds apart - poll finds parents out of touch
This Guardian/ICM poll and resulting special report shows parents knowledge of
what their kids get up to isn't that great. Regarding the internet, "Of
children who say that they have looked at pornography online, 60% of their
parents think that they have not done so, or did not know either way. The poll
shows that 15% of children say that they have talked about sex online. Only 3%
say they have met a stranger they encountered on the internet - but of those,
only 1% of parents are aware of the meeting."

us: Protect kids on the Internet
Cyberspace, the Wild West for sex offenders in search of young victims, is
notoriously hard to police. But officials have to try, and legislation that
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) unveiled last week is a pragmatic attempt to make
the Internet a bit less inviting for predators.

Global Task Force Combats Internet Child-Sex Predators (news release)
"The Internet is a great place for children to learn, have fun and communicate
with their peers. But where children go, the child sex predators will follow,"
says Jim Gamble, chairman of the Virtual Global Task Force (VGT) and chairman
of the United Kingdom's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center (CEOP).
On February 21-22, law enforcement officials from the United States, the United
Kingdom, Canada and Australia met in Washington at a VGT conference to explore
new ways to combat online pedophiles.

EC Sues Germany Over High-Speed Internet Law
The European Commission said Monday it was suing Germany over a law allowing
Deutsche Telekom to keep rivals off its high-speed Internet networks. A letter
"of formal notice" was sent to Berlin after it ignored repeated warnings not to
adopt legislation that could grant Deutsche Telekom a de facto monopoly on a
new broadband network. The German parliament on Friday passed the
telecommunications law, exempting Deutsche Telekom's high-speed network from
regulation.
