us: Utah Legislature Repeals Part of Internet Censorship Law
In response to a constitutional challenge mounted by CDT and others, the Utah
legislature this week passed a bill that repeals portions of the state's
controversial Internet censorship law. In 2005, CDT, the American Civil
Liberties Union of Utah, and a broad coalition of bookstores, independent
artists, trade associations and ISPs challenged the censorship law, which would
have required ISPs to block access to vast amounts of constitutionally
protected Internet content. The groups won a preliminary injunction against the
Utah law in 2006. Although the enactment yesterday of House Bill 5 rightly
repeals some of the most problematic aspects of the Utah law, the legislature
left other unconstitutional parts of the law intact, so the litigation pending
in federal court in Salt Lake City will continue. March 20, 2007

Violation of Intellectual Property Rights on the Internet: for Digital risks,
Digital Solutions
Internet has made intellectual property (“IP”) rights more vulnerable to
violations by every sector of society; business, students, and, of course, the
committed copyright infringer. Thus, those directly affected by copyright
violations have resorted to alternative methods to manage intellectual property
rights. Those alternative methods are digital technology programs designed to
control internet access and use of copyrighted material. There is a range of
companies currently offering a variety of digital programs for IP management,
this is not news. The extraordinary is the creativity found in some of these
digital programs. For instance, Digimarc, an American provider of IP management
solutions, created a program called “Digital Watermark.” This program is the
digital equivalent of traditional chemical watermarks.

American Studios' Secret Plan to Lock down European TV Devices
An international consortium of television and technology companies is devising

Europe, Australia, and much of Asia and Africa. In a report released today, EFF
shows how U.S. movie and television companies have convinced DVB to create new
technical specifications that would build digital rights management
technologies into televisions. These specifications are likely to take away
consumers' rights, which will subsequently be sold back to them piecemeal -- so
entertainment fans will have to pay again and again for legitimate uses of
lawfully acquired digital television content.

INTERNET & NEW TECHNOLOGY USE

uk: The Digital Age
We live in an increasingly connected society, with the rapid advance of ICT in
business and in the home. But by no means has everyone joined in the digital
age. There is a clear divide between small and large businesses, while in the
home, ICT ownership and use is closely linked to household income. Focus On the
Digital Age gives an overview of ICT use in the UK, showing the extent to which
people, education, business and government have taken up the new technology and
how ICT is changing working and business practices. It also looks at how the UK
compares with other countries and describes some of the problems associated

Managing Content in a Converged World
Robin Daniels talks about the challenges to the ability of companies to retain
customers when convergence comes around: One of the hot topics coming out of
3GSM in Barcelona was the increasing convergence of mobile and other end-user
devices, such as the PC, digital set-top boxes and digital music players. For
years, we seem to have been talking about 'digital convergence', but only with
the increasing availability of high-speed broadband and the growing capacity of
mobile networks is it now starting to become a reality. However, when it comes
to delivering content to all these devices, there still seems to be a less than
converged approach.
