".cn" becomes third largest national domain name
On June 17th, China's Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) announced
that by May 31st, the number of of China's registered ".cn" domain names had
reached more than 5.3 million globally. It has become the third largest
national domain name in global ranking, just following Germany's ".de" and
Britain's ".uk".

Domain Name Industry Threatened
Phil Corwin, representing Internet Commerce Association, discusses threats to
domain name owners. He noted several of these specific threats to domain names:
Domain name classification as property versus a license; ICANN; Registrar
conflicts of interest; Trademark interests and Search engine conflicts of
interest. Corwin concluded by saying the ICA’s future is uncertain. It raised
about $300,000 in seed money from companies such as Sedo and iREIT, but Corwin
says it needs at least $1M each year to be effective.

What Prevents IPv6 Deployment in Europe by Patrick Vande Walle
ZDNet UK has an article on IPv6 and what may slow down its deployment. Jay
Daley, from Nominet points out to the fact that the current IPv6 allocation
policy used by RIPE NCC is geared towards ISPs. This is a complaint I have
heard time and time again. Under the current policy, you have to show to RIPE
NCC that you are going to allocate 200 address blocks to your customers before
you are allocated a /32 block.

ICANN IDN Program Status Report
In preparation for the San Juan meeting and to provide better insight into the
plan for the eventual deployment of internationalized top-level labels, ICANN
released today a status report describing IDN Program activities. To facilitate
project management, IDN activities have been split into separate and
independent projects. These projects are: IDN Technical Tests and Evaluations,
IDN Security Study (SSAC), IDN Guidelines, IDN Repository, IDN Policy
Development, IDN Protocol Review and Revisions (IETF), IDN Outreach, and IDN
TLD Deployment.
http://icann.org/announcements/announcement-2-18jun07.htm

ICANN Releases Draft IDN Evaluation Plans
As announced previously in the IDN program status report, in the draft IANA
Root Zone Procedures for Test IDN Deployment, and the draft IDN TLD Root Server
Performance / Tolerance, ICANN has developed a plan for insertion of IDN TLDs
in the root zone for evaluation. The .test plan contains two separate
evaluation facilities where the feasibility and usability of fully localized
domain names can be evaluated and tested in a live environment. Implementation
of this plan is one of the core elements in ICANN’s IDN Program.

Summary and Analysis of Responses to Request for Public Comments and Dialogue
on ICANN's Performance
On May 8 2007, as part of an ongoing interest in continuous improvement, ICANN
sought community feedback about its performance. Several areas of performance,
drawn from the ICANN Strategic Plan, were of particular interest. Targeted
questions were asked. The questions and comments on these are posted on the
ICANN site.

RSSAC Statement on ICANN's Proposed Next Steps for IDN Deployment in the Root
Zone
The DNS Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC) has been asked for a
statement on ICANN's proposed next steps for IDN deployment in the root zone.
Policy discussions are continuing and are clearly out of scope for RSSAC. RSSAC
takes no position on what the contents of the strings used to instantiate IDNs
in the root should be, or how many there should be within a factor of 2-5 times
the current size of the root zone, or what the duration of the test should be,
as long as DNS protocol is followed regarding length of labels, permitted
characters, and so on.

Public Comments Sought on GNSO Improvements
The Board Governance Committee's GNSO Review Working Group has released a
"Draft Working Document on GNSO Improvements" that presents the Working Group's
initial thinking on, and raises questions about, how to improve the GNSO, for
discussion with the Community at the upcoming ICANN Meeting in San Juan and for
public comment through the ICANN website. This working draft does not reach any
definitive recommendations or conclusions at this time. It is posted to
encourage further public discussion and comment, and it does not represent the
position of the Working Group, the Board Governance Committee, or the Board.

DotPh’s Anonymous Domains: A Boon For Cyber-Gripers? (reg req'd)
The Philippine domain name registrar, DotPh, announced that it has started
offering anonymous registrations for the i.ph domain. This is intended to
support bloggers and individuals who maintain websites for personal purposes.
It is the world's first anonymous domain and can be activated by providing the
registrar with an email address and a mobile phone number. This is
unprecedented, and it is uncertain whether it would encourage Internet use in
the Philippines without sacrificing IP rights in the Philippines.
