Interview: ICANN Official On The Domain Name Infrastructure
ICANN coordinates the domain name system globally. ICANN was created in 1998 to
perform various Internet administrative tasks previously done by a range of
bodies including universities, private companies and the U.S. government. These
tasks involve ensuring the domain name system functions properly and that
individuals and companies can easily obtain and use domain names for their
lawful purposes. We asked Jason Keenan, Media Advisor with ICANN, how it all
works.

Cybercrime is in a state of flux
In the recently released internet thriller Untraceable, starring Diane Lane, a
criminal uses advanced technology to ensure that his own macabre website
remains "untraceable" to FBI agents trying to close him down. Cybercriminals in
the real world have their own version, "fast flux", to hide the location of
phishing and spamming sites and illegal malware. The technique was first
recognised in March 2007 by security companies monitoring criminal botnets like
Storm and Nugache. By January, it had become a standard weapon of choice for
phishers and spammers. Robert McCardle, from security firm Trend Micro, says:
"Fast flux is one of the biggest tools being used by criminal botnets today.
They are definitely on the rise, and make it even more difficult for web users
to be protected."

us: Parody of Wal-Mart Trumps Its Trademark
A Conyers, Ga., man has won a two-year legal battle with Wal-Mart, which has
demanded he stop making and selling T-shirts, beer steins and other items that
sport slogans such as "Wal-ocaust" and "Wal-Qaeda." ... "Although Wal-Mart
recognizes that Mr. Smith is entitled to disseminate his opinions concerning
Wal-Mart, however misinformed, Wal-Mart will not countenance Mr. Smith's
attempt to profit, through merchandise sales on his website under the
'Walocaust' domain name, from wrongfully associating Wal-Mart with the greatest
tragedy of the past century," Raskopf wrote.

Judge blesses "Wal-Qaeda," "Walocaust" anti-Wal-Mart Web sites
To put it mildly, Charles Smith, a 50-year-old computer store owner in Conyers,
Ga., isn't a fan of Wal-Mart. Indeed he considers the retailing giant to be
plying the same moral trade as Adolph Hitler and Osama Bin Laden -- and to
prove his seriousness, Smith has gone and done something that requires a good
deal of courage. He's designed a few impolite bumper stickers and T-shirts.
http://machinist.salon.com/blog/2008/03/26/walocaust/

us: Court upholds Conyers man's criticisms of Wal-Mart
A Conyers man may continue criticizing Wal-Mart with parodies on T-shirts that
compare the retail giant to the Holocaust and al-Qaida terrorists, a federal
judge has ruled. ... Smith then filed suit against Wal-Mart to seek a judgment
allowing him to continue marketing his satirical logos and designs. A month
later, Wal-Mart countersued and said the "tasteless" and "repulsive" logos
tarnished its trademarks and business reputation. It also objected to Smith's
registration and use of the www.walocaust.com Internet domain name.

In Rem Jurisdiction in Anticybersquatting Cases: Good Solution against Foreign
Cybersquatters
A recent decision by the United States District Court for the District of
Virginia held it had 'In Rem Jurisdiction' over domain name registrants that
were located in a foreign country and had been accused of Cyber squatting in
Virginia. Even though this was not a contested case and the plaintiff was
granted summary judgment, this decision is a great precedent on the
interpretation of the US Anti-cybersquatting Act and US Courts" jurisdiction on
foreign cybersquatters. This article briefs the case of Atlas Copco v.

Network Solutions Pre-Censors Anti-Islam Site
Web site name registrar Network Solutions is blocking access to a site owned by
a controversial Dutch politician known for his confrontational views about
Islam and Muslim immigrants. The move by one of the largest companies in the

first documented case of Internet pre-censorship by a major U.S.-based Web
