The end of the age of free
For a decade now, consumers have become accustomed to free access to music,

Editorial: Is the era of free news over?
One safe prediction where the internet is concerned is that most predictions

Charging for online content may be a lifeline for publishers
It is going to be like stuffing toothpaste back in the tube, says Jack

The Economist debate - Copyright and wrongs: This house believes that existing
copyright laws do more harm than good
The moderator's opening remarks: Copyright strangles creativity. Copyright
rewards originality. It is a nuisance to the public that unduly enriches a few
people. It is the backbone of our knowledge economy that fuels progress. Hate
it, love it, break it, protect it; few people lack strong opinions about
copyright and its place in society. Copyright is just that—the right to make
copies. Prior to the printing press there was no such thing. The act of
duplication was so labour-intensive and imperfect that it was tolerated. After
Gutenberg's technology made disseminating ideas easier and a better business,
the act of publishing eventually became a matter of royal privilege (as much to
control content as raise income). Books were expensive and quality was poor.

us: Trolling someone online? Bill would slap you with jail time
A recently introduced cyberbullying bill could land us all in jail—that is, if
you have ever used an electronic medium to troll someone. HR 1966, the Megan

suicide" victim Megan Meier. It's meant to prevent people from using the
Internet to "coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional
distress to a person." However, as with many bills of this nature, the murky
language and vague standards leave much open to interpretation, which has
caused critics to call it the Censorship Act instead.

Google's Washington Influence Grows
Google is rising fast. It has a near-monopoly on Internet searches, holds a
commanding share of the growing online advertising market, and is expanding
into myriad online services now dominated by its politically wired corporate
rivals. That trajectory matches Microsoft's, but with a major difference.
Microsoft spurned Washington and was subsequently humbled by a 1998 antitrust
lawsuit backed by its rivals. Google has carefully cultivated friends and
political clout in Washington, particularly on the Democratic side of the
aisle, to help it withstand the inevitable pushback from aggrieved competitors.
