Anti-Censorship, Benevolent Payloads and Human Rights by Alana Maurushat [UNSW
Law Research Paper]
Abstract: Computers and robots have long been used in “physical” environments
where it is too dangerous, hostile, or difficult for humans to perform tasks.
What about situations where the danger stems from political and legal
environments? This paper will look at the ethical and legal use of a computer
worm to perform anti-censorship tasks.

INTERNET USE
**********************
Google blames outage on system error and online traffic jam
Google Inc. is blaming this morning's Google Apps service outage on a system
error that caused a major traffic jam. The company reported that the outage,
which started a little before 11 a.m. EDT, caused about 14% of Google users to
face slow service or interruptions. The problem affected all Google products,
including Google Search, Google News, Gmail, Google Maps and Google Reader.

Google Stumbles
Google gasped Thursday morning--and many others on the Internet shuddered. By
mid morning in New York City, the Google outage seemed to be system-wide: its
search, calendar, e-mail ... everything associated with the company seems slow

Wolfram Alpha: The search is on
It is the curse of every internet search engine to be compared to Google,
master of the universe and supreme ruler over two-thirds of such searches.
Since newcomers never measure up to the breadth and depth of the billions of

end with an easy win for the incumbent. Pretenders to the throne, nevertheless,
keep appearing.

The afternoon talks at Thinking Digital began with a YouTube star, Johnny Chung

he basically showed how almost anyone could create a multi-touch whiteboard for
$100 and a weekend of work. It's being used all over the world, especially in
places where these boards could be useful but were previously unaffordable.

Protecting Children in Cyberspace - Jamaican Office of the Prime Minister
The Internet, cyberspace, represents one of the greatest technological
advancements of the 20th century and plays an important role in all aspects of
life but most importantly communication, education, commerce and entertainment.
It has radically changed global social interactions. Many of you have witnessed
children sitting beside each other but communicating via texting, instant
messaging or by e-mail. The larger the group, the more the children seem to
have fun. Their fascination with the social networking websites such as Hi5,
Facebook and MySpace is unabated. Videos, audios and text are exchanged in real
time and have rapidly replaced the need for personal interface as we knew it a
few years ago.

CENSORSHIP

The Censors Right Here at Home
Internet censorship used to be pretty easy to spot. When China blocks YouTube
or prohibits anything on the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, it's not hard to
figure out what's going on. But as governments and commercial firms get savvier
about the Internet, censorship is getting more subtle. A slow Web site could be
an accidental glitch or something more intentional.
