Russia Is Torn Over Push for Use of Cyrillic Web Domains
The Kremlin has long been irritated by the way the United States dominates the
Internet, all the way down to the ban on using Cyrillic for Web addresses —
even kremlin.ru has to be demeaningly rendered in English. The Russian
government, as a result, is taking the lead in a landmark shift occurring
around the world to allow domain names in languages with non-Latin alphabets.

Russians Not Keen on IDN Top Level Domain
The reaction was swift and positive — finally, after years of typing in
Latin-based top level domains, people who use different character sets would
soon be able to type in new top level domain names in their own alphabets.

New York Times Reviews Cyrillic IDNs
The New York Times discussed the future of Cyrillic IDNs. The NYT article
focused on the point that many Russians are wary of the roll out of its
forthcoming Cyrillic ccTLD, .рф, which stands for Russian Federation. The fear
is that websites run on .рф domains will be heavily regulated, censored and
possibly seized.

Berlin the Latest New TLD Battleground? by Michele Neylon
If you've been following the new Top-Level Domain (TLD) process within ICANN
over the last year or so you will have probably been aware of how slow and
tortuous development has been. To recap, ICANN, which oversees domain names
globally, announced that it was "opening up" the internet so that "anyone"
could get the domain extension they wanted. Of course it's not really
"everyone" and the process to date has been far from smooth.

Expressions of Interest for New TLDs Still a Long Wait
If the current draft plan for accepting “Expressions of Interest” for new top
level domain names is adopted in similar form, ICANN won’t start accepting
applications until June 2010 at the earliest.

Stephen Conroy: Dear Crikey, here’s why you’re wrong
In these times of bloggers, citizen journalism and the 24-hour news cycle,
quality journalism is under threat. Nowhere is it more apparent than in Crikey.
Its coverage over the past week with regard to the government’s announcement on
ISP level filtering has been nothing short of disingenuous. ... Stilgherrian
wrote about a fake Stephen Conroy website having the domain deleted by the
industry self-regulatory body auDA where he asked, “Did Senator Conroy or
someone in his office pressure auDA for a quick result?”

(yesterday, item 16). There is no pleasing the likes of Stilgherrian and
Electronic Frontiers Australia. I think they’d like us to believe that we
should have faith in the anarchic and self-managing characteristics of the
internet. However when the self-same processes come back to do something they
don’t like they react with outrage.

Obama Year One: Betrayal and Failure (Part I)
Promising change after eight George Bush and Republican dominated years, Barack
Obama won the most sweeping non-incumbent victory in over 50 years along with
congressional Democrats gaining large House and Senate majorities. In addition,
at 56.8%, voter turnout was the highest since Richard Nixon's "secret plan" to
end the Vietnam war and his "Southern" and "law and order" strategies beat
Hubert Humphrey and independent George Wallace in 1968. ... In March, Obama's
DHS cybersecurity head, Rod Beckstrom, resigned over NSA's greater role in
guarding government computer systems, its concentrated power with no checks or
balances, and the continuation of Bush's illegal warrantless wiretapping called
secret and not reviewable by courts for reasons of national security.

Le devenir du marché des noms de domaine français
L'Association française pour le nommage internet en coopération (Afnic, pour
