IANA Business Excellence Explained
For the last couple of years the ICANN community and board have set staff a
strategic priority of excelling in core operations. In the current draft
strategic plan for 2010-2013 the emphasis has focused on the IANA Department,
with a headline priority of excelling “in IANA and other core operations”. At
the same time, ICANN staff has been working hard on making sure that the IANA
functions are delivered to an increasingly high standard.

ICANN Taking Applications for International Domains
ICANN is taking applications for domain names in non-Latin alphabets and hopes
to approve a few early this year. While some have raised security issues around
the potential for domain spoofing, the organization's senior director for of
IDNs says protective measures are in place at both the technical and procedural
levels.

ICANN Moves Ahead with International Domains
At some point in early 2010, the world will see the first full domain names in
a non-Latin based alphabet. The first IDNs for use as ccTLDs are now being
considered as part of the process begun in November by Internet governance
organization ICANN.

IDN Scaremongering: Mashable and Times Online Screw Up by Michele Neylon
IDNs might be a slightly "hot" topic at the moment following on from ICANN's

How Not to Develop Public Policy by David Maher
Some of ICANN's current proceedings on the introduction of new generic top
level domains (gTLDs) provide a case study on how not to develop public policy.
In particular, the Rights Protection Mechanism proceedings, with serious
implications for trademark owners, have followed a course that does not
correspond to the ideal of ICANN's bottom-up, consensus-based processes for
policy development. More importantly, these proceedings are effectively
unilateral developments in international law without the benefit of treaties or
international conventions.

Poor IDNs. The Media Will Never Understand.
They sky is falling! The sky is falling! Or so the headlines read. Last week I
mentioned an article in The London Times about the introduction of domain names
with non-Roman characters. As I noted, the article was completely wrong. It
said that non-Roman characters will be allowed for the first time “to the left
of the dot”, i.e. the second level domain name. Tell that to the people who’ve
already registered millions of such names.

ICANN’s introduction of non-Latin domains could earn phishers millions
A couple months ago, ICANN announced that they would finally extend the URL
protocol to allow domain names that use non-Latin alphabets. This has wide
implications: it will expand the Internet in hugely significant ways, not just
in accessibility terms but as far as the breadth of domain names that are
possible.

How Non-Latin Domain Names Could Be Used to Steal Your Money
Unicode is great because it supports multiple languages simultaneously,
bringing international understanding, universal peace, and planetary love. And
so is ICANN's decision to allow domain names that use non-Latin alphabets.

Changes in the ICANN Board's Operational Activities by Michael D. Palage
One of the more interesting developments in this new year is the proposed
changes in how, or perhaps more accurately, when the ICANN Board will undertake
its activities. Historically, the ICANN Board has held monthly teleconferences
(Special Board Meetings), with the exception of those months when the ICANN
Board meet in person as part of a regional meeting (Regular Board Meeting).

Internet Drug Traffic, Service Providers and Intellectual Property
You could call this Part Three in our series on Illicit Internet Pharmacy. Part
One being What's Driving Spam and Domain Fraud? Illicit Drug Traffic, Part Two
being Online Drug Traffic and Registrar Policy. There are a few facts I'd like

at this time is related to illicit international drug traffic, mostly
counterfeit and diverted pharmaceuticals. ... So, folks may wonder why if there
is an abundance of research data as well as legal authority. Reason is simple:
no enforcement. Many IP attorneys have expressed their lack of faith in WIPO

Tudományokban gazdag új esztendőnk lesz
... Ugyancsak 2010 lesz az az év, amikor az internet felhasználói szakíthatnak
