I don't know if the update involved installing anything from unstable (unlikely); it definitely didn't involve *upgrading* a package to something not in testing. IMHO the 99% solution to this problem is to prevent this condition in the first place: if installing a (single) package FOO, any solution which does not in fact install FOO is by definition wrong and should be blocked before even entering the resolver.
