No, that's true:

$ apt-cache show aptitude | fgrep Recommends
Recommends: aptitude-doc-en | aptitude-doc, sensible-utils, apt-xapian-index, 
libparse-debianchangelog-perl

So I don't really see the problem so far.

BTW, was python-xapian marked as "automatically installed" or not?

So the bug is about the fact that "aptitude why" just shows one
possible path and not all of them? Or at least not the most
obvious from your point of view?
