If LANGUAGE contains a non-english language code (and LANG is set), aptitude
will show the non-english translation even though english is preferred:

env - LANG=en_US LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=en_GB:en:en_US:C:de_DE:de
aptitude search wmakerconf-data
p wmakerconf-data - Daten fr wmakerconf, das Window Maker Kon

It doesn't happen if LANG is unset (i.e. it behaves as documented [1]):

sascha.silbe@twin:~$ env - LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_GB:en:en_US:C:de_DE:de aptitude search wmakerconf-data
p wmakerconf-data - Data files for wmakerconf, a configuration

LC_CTYPE needs to be set to get UTF-8 output, otherwise the output is
garbled/incomplete. It doesn't affect the translation selection.

I couldn't trigger the same behaviour in plain gettext (e.g. by running
"gettext --help"), so I'm filing this against aptitude.

Hi,

I tried to reproduce this bug with 0.6.8.3-1 from unstable, but could
not. I don't know if I am doing something wrong though. First I had
to enable the locale with "dpkg-reconfigure locales" to make german
translations work, but maybe I am missing other configuration from
your system.

Also, this bug was submitted long ago, it might have been triggered
due to other specific problems or characteristics of the versions of
the software used by that time.

So I think that it's better to close this report now, but if it
persists and you still can interact to try to find a solution, please
reopen the bug again.

In any case, thanks for the report and sorry that it was not handled
in a more timely manner.

Cheers.
