JFTR: we did quite a few times before being denied the abibreak for jessie, so I am pretty sure a rebuild against the new abi is all what is needed (modulo any breakage we introduced since then, but well) to fix this, but this is something we will continue to work on after jessie. I am relatively sure that newer experimental versions even work correctly with non-recompiled aptitude and its just "old" experimental fighting against newer experimental as upgradepaths were quite rough and I haven't spend too much time on them (= the postinst should deal with them, but it could be that I missed a case) as the solution if something is bad is a removal of the lists directory. Someone using experimental should be able to do that. I feel really bad about leaving all these (gross over- estimate) 5 people hanging, but I think it is also in their interest that I prefer fixing jessie bugs instead of experimental bugs in the time available… (I know that this sounded like sarcasm, but it really isn't. I am sorry, its just that there isn't much I can do about it) That said, there will be some work in the form of various deprecated methods and members to make use of all the good stuff (and get right of the bad things) so the compiler will be quite chatty, but it is hopefully clear what to do about them and in any case: It would be a "stretch" to call this an important todo-list item at the moment… So feel free to bug me (or deity@) about this after jessie, but not a minute earlier. ;) (assuming apt is actually part of the jessie release… lets say it this way: I have some mixed signals here…) Best regards David Kalnischkies
