Yes. I though was not able to reproduce similar looking garbage it in a pbuilder chroot. Any chance that it looks like https://people.debian.org/~abe/aptitude.gif if you change the highlighted item with the cursor keys? Because I was able to reproduce _that_ behaviour (reported by Matthijs van Duin in the aftermath of #794830).
