You mean "aptitude dist-upgrade xserver-xorg-video-all"? Yes, this does help: The following packages will be REMOVED: libdiscover1{a} libglib1.2{a} libgssapi2{a} libk3b2{a} liborbit0{a} libpci2{a} modutils{a} xserver-xorg-video-newport{a} xserver-xorg-video-via{a} This result does look alright, removing these packages seems to be ok, as far as I can tell (apt-get would remove the same packages).OK, good. That's one of the few ways you can hint the resolver in the lenny version of aptitude; hopefully it's a reasonable work-around for this problem.
#502285 and #498800 look like manifestations of the same problem, #498800 contains some information about how to hint aptitude in the right direction. As I just wrote in a comment to #502285, the aptitude resolver implementation changed a lot since they were reported, specially around 2009-2010, so I don't know if it's of much use to keep these bugs open. There are manifestations of similar problems (solutions offered not being good) in later versions, but trying to reproduce the particular behaviour of these bug reports is not very useful, I think, when we have more recent and better examples and with more information to see what's going on.
