Package: aptitude
Version: 0.0.8.7-1
Severity: wishlist
an interesting addition to aptitude would be to allow user to input one (or
more) sources which would then be browsed (like they were the only sources)
the sources could be stored for later reference.
this way getting software from experimental or some other sources would be
easier. (and a lot cleaner than to add the source itself to
/etc/apt/sources.list)

this way getting software from experimental or some other sources would be
easier. (and a lot cleaner than to add the source itself to
/etc/apt/sources.list)
This behaviour doesn't seem easy or that can be implemented reliably (or
possible not doable at all) with the current implementation, because
aptitude relies on apt, which needs to read sources.list or similar, and
then at the very least it would require to download the repository index
and parse it on the fly in the same way than when modifying the
sources.list file.
Modifying these files programmatically and on the fly (but typing URL by
hand), and then re-read all repository index information doesn't seem
very different from modifying the files by hand and updating the repo
information with a keystroke from aptitude; and I cannot see how it's
"cleaner" (other than maybe discarding the adding repository when
closing aptitude's "session").
Also, I am not sure that allowing such an action "install and forget" is
advisable, the current version in experimental (or a special purpose
repository, e.g. mozilla.debian.net) can be horribly broken or have
security issues, so if the experimental repo is disabled instantly, it
will not even get any chance to see critical updates.
So yes, users of experimental / non-sanctioned repos already do that at
their own risk, but I am not sure that aptitude should make these kind
of risky behaviours more easy, because it looks a pretty bad practice to
me.
So if users really want to tweak the knobs and play the fire it's OK --
it's free software after all. But I do not think that it's a good idea
to spend a lot of time implementing features that allow people to shoot
themselves in the foot more easily, rather than fixing more pressing
problems.
But in any case, this request from the early days didn't see any seconds
14 years later, and nobody felt the need to implement it either and it's
not going to be implemented any time soon... so I think that it's fair
to mark it as + wontfix and close it -- doing it now.
