Today with 0.7.5-3 I am happy to report that if one says "n"
aptitude indeed does not mark the versions as forbidden.
However this is still after the words
# aptitude forbid-version less
Marking version 481-1 of package less as forbidden
Therefore please change the wording to
Will mark version 481-1 of package less as forbidden
(Before finally asking Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?])
This is a consequence of the combination of the two non-default options
above. Until the last few releases, aptitude remained silent when doing
these operations even when verbose>0. It was made explicit by some
request (probably yours).
.oO( That proves, yet again, that even the most seemingly innocuous
changes often bring a never-ending stream of maintenance work
down the line ).
With the current implementation, the functions printing this information
(and similar for "keep"/"hold"/"auto-installed") don't know if the
prompt will later be forced to be invoked, so it's not straightforward
to achieve the requested behaviour. Even if it was, it means adding
many more messages for all the different possibilities, adding work to
the tens of translations.
I don't think that it's a good to change/complicate even more the
current implementation for such a corner case. If this was to be fixed,
maybe it would be better to just remove the confirmation messages and
assume that everything went fine.
In addition, as with the rest of aptitude behaviour, I think that it's
quite clear that if there's an explicit confirmation request, the
previous actions have not been taken.
More in general, if in any program one sees something along the lines
of: "Removing $blah. Continue? (y/n)", if one says no, the action does
not take place. This is somehow occluded by the fact that other
messages about upgrading/removing/etc get in the way, but this is due to
another issue which hopefully it will be sorted at some point -- if the
never-ending stream of reported minor issues permit...
