--- Begin Message ---Package: aptitude Version: 0.2.13-2 Severity: wishlist Hello, Initially aptitude wants to remove the "gnome" package. Trying to work out why is complex process that IMHO could be made easier. If mark the gnome package for installation, suddenly 10 other packages break. This is strange, because the gnome package is marked not broken. I go to one of these packages, eg. gnome-desktop, which is marked as purged and broken. I mark it as removed, and the gnome package breaks. This is confusing, because when I last viewed the "gnome" package, it listed the dependancies like: --\ Depends --- gnome-desktop (= 37) --- gnome-office (= 37) --- evolution | balsa --- bluefish --- netspeed --- rhythmbox --- synaptic | gnome-apt --- xscreensaver This does not make it clear that the dependancies cannot be satisfied, I have expand each item in turn to realize this: --\ Depends --\ gnome-desktop (= 37) pBA 37 --- gnome-office (= 37) --- evolution | balsa --- bluefish --- netspeed --- rhythmbox --- synaptic | gnome-apt --- xscreensaver It would have been better, IMHO if it could display it as: --\ Depends --- gnome-desktop (= 37) (BROKEN) --- gnome-office (= 37) --- evolution | balsa --- bluefish --- netspeed --- rhythmbox --- synaptic | gnome-apt --- xscreensaver Also, since one of the dependacies for gnome is broken, that should make gnome broken too, right? Alternatively maybe another state would be better, eg. depends on broken package. This would help in the case where I want to install package XYZ that depends on gnome. Currently all the dependancies in the XYZ view would look OK, even though gnome is broken because gnome-desktop is broken because its dependancies are not in the archive. I gather what happened here is that the new version of gnome requires gnome-desktop to get installed, but gnome-desktop is not installable because one of its dependancies, gnome-media cannot be satisfied. Anyway, I hope you can make some sense of this bug report in order to make aptitude a better program.
