Identify Life - A new project to revolutionise web-based keys
The Centre recently obtained a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore
Foundation in California to develop the Key to Life concept, now called
Identify Life. The idea is to develop an innovative and flexible means of
delivering taxonomic identification services via the Internet, utilising
morphological information stored in distributed databases. Identify Life will
also provide a mechanism for producing web-based identification keys more
rapidly and at much less cost than is currently possible by pooling data from
many disparate sources such as printed keys (using the Lucid Phoenix software
tool), published and unpublished taxonomic databases, phylogenetic data files
and natural language descriptions into a web-service database.
The Centre will soon launch a web site as one means of facilitating
international collaboration in this venture. Click here for more information
about this project
APHIS Lucid coordinator appointed
The Centre for Plant Health Science and Technology (CPHST) within the Animal
and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in the USA has appointed Dr.
Terrence Walters as the Lucid Coordinator for CPHST. Based at the National Weed
Management Laboratory, Fort Collins, Colorado, Terrence will provide support to
the team of key developers within APHIS and the US Department of Agriculture
involved in developing keys for APHIS identifiers.
Terrence is an experienced plant taxonomist - he was previously executive
director of Montgomery Botanical Center (MBC) in, Miami, Florida, where he was
also the institution's archivist and cycad scientist. During his 10 years at
the Centre, MBC developed the world's largest scientifically-documented
population-based ex situ collection of palms and cycads.
CBIT has had a contract with CPHST-APHIS since March 2002 to provide Lucid
software, training and support. During that time CPHST has commissioned the
development of over 14 Lucid keys. With Terrence joining the team, the
development and use of Lucid is likely to show a marked increase.
New Lucid diagnostic keys
Two new Lucid3 keys have recently been produced for diagnosing problems in
crops - both of which are available on the Internet.
Note: To access both keys you need to have installed a free version of Java
Runtime Environment (Java download).
Key to Post-harvest Diseases for Cantaloupe
This key, which was developed by Gerald Holmes at North Carolina State
University, USA, enables the user to identify 24 cantaloupe fruit diseases
encountered post-harvest.
Click here to access the key.
Sweetpotato DiagNotes
This product is an interactive tool for extension workers, students,
researchers and others who want to learn about the sweetpotato crop; about the
pest, disease and other problems that can occur; how to diagnose crop symptoms
and what management practices can be used to deal with sweetpotato disorders.
The interactive (Lucid3) key contained in this product allows users to
diagnose or at least make a short list of possible problems occurring in a
sweetpotato crop. The key covers over 80 sweetpotato insect and mite pests,
nematodes, diseases, nutrient and other disorders. The combination of text
descriptions and over 700 images helps users in the process of diagnosing their
problems.
Click here to access the key.
This key was developed at the The University of Queensland, in collaboration
with Leyte State University ( Philippines), the International Potato Center
(Indonesia), and a number of other, international collaborators, and funded by
the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
Forage selection tool
Forage research over the last 50 years has identified many useful tropical
grasses and legumes. Information on their adaptation and use has resided in
peer-reviewed literature, research reports with limited distribution and, most
importantly, in the memories of forage agronomists with decades of experience.
An international project, funded by the Australian Centre for International
Agricultural Research and other donor agencies has brought this information
together in the form of a selection tool based on CBIT's Lucid3 software.
The Lucid3 database contains information sheets on the adaptation, use and
management of over 200 forage species, cultivars and elite accessions; a
collection of photographs and images of species to help in their identification
and use; and a bibliography of more than 6,000 references and abstracts. The
rules of the Lucid3 selection tool are based on the experiences of more than 50
forage specialists who have worked for many years in tropical and subtropical
regions of Africa, Tropical USA, Central and South America, South and
South-east Asia and Australia. Users of the tool can access this expertise to
determine the most suitable species and cultivars for specific sites, based on
19 criteria, including such factors as rainfall, altitude, soil texture,
fertility and pH, and intended use.
You can access this tool at http://www.tropicalforages.info
Note: You need to have installed a free version of Java Runtime Environment
to run Lucid3 (Java download).

Keys to quarantine pests and diseases
CBIT, together with Terrence Walters, the newly appointed Lucid coordinator
for APHIS (See APHIS Lucid coordinator appointed), has compiled a list of Lucid
keys of relevance to plant health and quarantine.
These keys, which are either already available or still in development, are
mostly being produced in the US, Australia and New Zealand. We hope that the
lists will help facilitate further international collaboration in the
development and use of Lucid keys for quarantine and plant health.

Recent release - Free upgrade to Fact Sheet Fusion
Fact Sheet Fusion, a tool to facilitate the rapid generation of standardised
fact sheets in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) or XML (eXtensible Markup
Language), was released earlier this year. There is now a new free upgrade of
this software for those who have already purchased Fact Sheet Fusion.
For more about Fact Sheet Fusion, go to http://www.lucidcentral.org/fusion/

Future Lucid Workshops - Ecuador, Costa Rice, USA
As part of the Moore Foundation project to provide and support Lucid
software in developing countries, the Centre will be facilitating two workshops
in South and Latin America during August and September this year.
The first workshop will be held in Ecuador from the 30th August to the 1st
September. For further details about the workshop, please contact Dr Hugo
Navarrete ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
The second workshop will be in Costa Rica - from the 6th to the 8th
September. For further details about this workshop, please contact
Dr Enrique Castro ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Later in the year, CBIT staff will join Dr Terrence Walters in facilitating a
series of Lucid workshops across the USA, primarily for those associated with
the development of keys for quarantine purposes. Please contact Terrence at
