But I think it is more useful to see first, the response from the modem
when it is in command mode - that works with comtool - and second,
the echo from the far (receiving) side of the link in data mode, to
let you know you have a loop. These both work with comtool.
A local echo can be confusing and misleading.

Michael, if you can see the response from the modem when you type
+++ATH you should be able to talk to the other box with a null modem
cable. It cannot be possible with a straight cable unless you use a
null modem adapter connector.

I don't know what a laplink cable is. 
Does it have standard RS232 connectors ?
Does it have the same sex on both ends ?
Can it connect two standard HP comm ports together ?

If all the above are yes, it is probably null modem.
