It not impossible to do. Check

SET's editor v0.4.52 http://setedit.sourceforge.net/
Familiar text editor with Borland interface with syntax highlighting
and background playing of MP3 files!

So while coding using DJGPP (or Pascal etc)
you can listen to MP3 files!

MPXPLAY v1.45.2 http://mpxplay.cjb.net
MP3,OGG,WAV,MPC player with integrated file browser,
  spectrum analyser and other features.

has a feature which allows you to shell to DOS while continuing to
play the MP3 file in memory (to do this press Ctrl-D).
It works but it doesn't switch automatically to the next one so
you would have to re-enter MPXplay by
 - by exiting from Arachne with Esc key,
 - typing exit to return to MPXplay,
 - selecting next MP3 to play, exiting MPXplay by pressing Ctrl-D
 - at command prompt, arachne -r to return to web browsing

Free DOS memory inside Arachne is 46K but no problems while composing
this message so far.
