I'm answering because I think you really want an answer.
The people who buy the software for the companies who make up 90% of MS
income are NOT computer users. Nor are they people who would want to
train their entire MIS in a new area. They are the kind of people who
would "always buy Big Blue, because they have a rep and it anything goes
wrong no one can blame us."
It's not a matter of lazy ... it's a matter of not just "rethinking" but
of "retooling" the entire MIS staff.
What I anticipate is not pleasant, and the crash of businesses who
depend upon e-commerce in any way shape or form could make the Stock
Market crash of 29{?} look like a ride in the park.

This can also be done with an Arachne Script File (*.asf). I wrote a
little script for the last version Michael released that had 2
alternate low and lowest memory core.exe files and then put a button
on my dialer page to swap them from withing Arachne. You could even
put a button on the Toolbar (for those using 800x600 or greater
resolution). It worked great. Now though, with the functionality of
Arachne with LSPPP, low memory is less of a problem for A'. HTH.

Recently someone mentioned operamail as being similar to mailandnews, so I
gave it a try.
True, unlike mailandnews, you don't have to turn cookies off.
But also unlike mailandnews:
It is web-only, with no POP3 option.
Newsgroups are limited to those that discuss the Opera browser.
As with mailandnews, any msg I wrote with the default "template"
disappeared. But unlike mailandnews, the same thing happened when I used
one of the older graphical interfaces. Only when I switched to the text-
only template was I able to send outbound email.
However, the text-only template looks pretty good. And loading of msgs is
fast. So if you want a web-only email solution that works with Arachne,
operamail is not a bad way to go.

I've got two ethernet cards: one of them is Surecom NE-34 (PCI) and the other
is Surecom NE-12 (ISA PnP, but can be PnP feature can be disabled in order to
set it up manually).
Both of them are NE2000 compatible. I have the manufacturer's set of drivers
for both of them, but I can use generic NE2000 drivers for putting them to
work. At least for Personal Netware. I bet the NE2000 packet driver works too,
although I haven't tried yet. Also I had no trouble at all setting them up to
work under Linux.
The only notable exception is Windows who does not recognize them as being
NE2000 compatible.
The only important things to know about network cards are their settings. (I/O
address, IRQ etc.) These can be found using a small utility program, usually
existing on the disk shipped together with the card. These utilities are to
be found on the manufacturer web site, too. (usually bundled together with the
drivers for different OS-es).
Supposing you are unsure about the type of your card (in many cases the name
is not to be found clearly written on them) , there are three alternetives.
- - Do a FCC ID search is there is any FCC ID marked on it. This will reveal its
manufacturer.
- - Notice the type of its controller (eg. RTL8029) and try generic drivers and
utilities for it.
- - Use generic NE2000 or 3COM drivers. Maybe you're in luck.
