The Long File Names are not the subject although they might cause
trouble. Many sites do use legal html, no javascript or other nasty
things and images with 8.3 names... but these cannot easyly saved.

All is in the cache... however with fancy numbered names and no clue to
the original name that could be use by the HTML text file.
There is a connection though... cache.idx
In cache.idx the original names and the new ones in the cache are
connected and it is possible to retrieve the data.
But... I have to use a pen and paper (rather primitive) and do a lot
searching if the cache is well filled.

The history list (backspace key) will bring the site back to life if
offline but no saving can be done...
Can we direct the data to a file and not to the monitor (or both); that
would solve the saving problem.

No, I don't unfortunately. But there may be a work-around.

IIRC doing downloads with X-modem requires you to enter the name that
the received file is to be saved under, whereas Y- and Z-modem preserve
the original name and date of the file during the download.

So using X-modem for your file downloads should solve the problem. The
only hard part is that you need to work out what the new filename is to
be.

We can get a very drinkable claret here -- de Bortolli Special Claret --
for $10 for a 4 litre cask! It's better than a lot of more expensive
bottled stuff! And of course that's AUD$10, about USD$6.50 at current

One of the coffee bean shops in Adelaide's Central Market is selling

I'll be charitable and accept that explanation, although IMO it shows a

DISCUSSION AND WISHLIST RE SEND MAIL AND GET MAIL.

I have set up my own personal control page to include the buttons Send
Mail and Get Mail.

I click on one of these buttons and the respective operation SMPT: or
POP3: takes place. Meanwhile I am looking at my own page as the mail is
up or downloaded. But as soon as the Send or Get is finished, I am
transferred to either the (now empty) Outbox or to the Inbox.

And that prompts a question: What earthly use is it to be presented with
the empty Outbox once the SMPT: function has finished uploading the
mail, other than to show you that all the mail has been uploaded? And
surely if the upload was aborted for any reason there would be an error
message to that effect.

But here is where I have problems: After an up or download of mail, the
temptation is to press Esc (equivalent to the Back button) to get back
to my personal page, but of course this takes me to the SMPT: or the
POP3: function, which tries to send or get mail again, even though there
isn't any left to send or get.

My first preference would be that once SMPT: or POP3: function is
finished, the user should be left on the screen that the function was
called from.

My second preference is that the SMPT: or POP3: should NOT be able to be
recalled by the Back button. If this means they shouldn't appear in the
HISTORY.LST then that's fine by me.

Here is an interesting problem I've noticed with the Compose Mail or
Reply, or the Modify outgoing mail functions:

If I edit the To: CC: Subject: and Attachments: fields, then I use the
external editor to write the message or reply, when I return, the above
fields have all reverted to what they were before I entered data or
editied them.

This is obviously a nuisance, as one is inclined to fill in these fields
first, since they are at the top of the page, before one edits the
message.

Is there any reason why it should be so?

When I needed to save a complete web site to a floppy I tried this
approach:

1. I boot to Linux and download the complete site
with wget into the Linux file system.

2. I have a look at the file names:

a) There are no files with first 8 characters identical -
so I copy the file tree to the DOS partition and get 8.3 file
names that I can browse with Arachne. (In that case it would have
been easier to use the DOS version of wget)

b) I realize that there are not more than ten files with the
first 7 characters identical: I use a bash script that

- - picks any group of files with first 7 characters identical
and replaces the 8th character with 0 to 9

- - replaces all references to these files in HTML tags (href, img
etc.) within all other files of the entire tree

c) If there are more than 10 files with the same beginning or the file
system of the site is more complex (recursion needed, references
may include or do not include the path) it turns out to be

... close to impossible (as Glenn already stated before).

However -- to the other gurus -- no matter what I do I can no longer use

me to go from my 'puter through a router into my ISP would be *greatly*

That *was* the old limit for any *one* folder.

Be it 'inbox', 'outbox', \mail\oldstuff\*.mes, etc... etc....

The *new* limit is now 1024

But since you are still usimng v1.66.....

I do it all the time. :)

But....

There is no easy substitute for saving ALL, repeat ALL, the files
involved, as 8.3 file names, remembering what each one is, then editing
the .HTM code to match those file names.

Except .....

More often than not, it is possible to use WGET (as mentioned
before) to regressively retrieve the whole website.

HOWEVER ...

WGET does not deal with file names longer than 8.3 ! So you had
better check for long file names of graphics, sound files, multimedia
files, etc.. before you start, otherwise each matching file will
overwrite the previous one.

This nuisance you have reported has been commented on many
times before. There is most probably a reason why it should
be so. Now that we have a GPL version of Arachne there might
some hope of fixing it. IMHO, fixing this problem should go
on the back burner for now because it is just a minor nuisance
for those who are aware of the problem and know how to deal
with it. Also because some of the most minor nuisances are
often among the most difficult to fix.

I'm running Arachne and a couple of other internet apps through a router
with no problems. What kind of router do You have? Most of the hardware
routers have built in fire wall capabilities. If this is the caes with
Your hardware You should enable ports 20 and 21 in the firewall for FTP

But very simple (for the "Doze morons") and clearly possible using any
of the past several generations of the Opera browser. There are sites
out there to parse content for PDA users, and somebody with the wit
and will could do similar for Arachne. In the meantime, within reason,
I'll save pages with images (all to one directory, which is how Opera
does it), zip them up and mail them to anyone who sends an email with
subject: [A-list] Jake, save this webpage
and the URLs in the message body.
Please do NOT send any request via the A-list!

When I first got online I did alot of hand editing of saved pages to
get close to the printer-friendly versions available these days. I
assumed that the developers of the major browsers had given little
thought to saving content for offline use because American users
weren't faced with monthly phone-bills of $75 or more for metered
access.

My own pages make minimal use of image content, but always have the
images and style sheet (if linked) placed in the same directory, for
easy saving. I include a human-readable link to the online version,
so it can be found from a printed copy. As I no longer upload regularly
from Win3.1x I've dropped 8.3 filenames, but try to use LFNs which
truncate somewhat usefully for photo collections e.g.:
wm01-640x480-2002-06-windmill-from-south-east.jpg
The 8.3 user is left with an indication of the subject, its position
in the sequence, and its screen size.

Jake

Daily, I download html pages (as text) from a UNIX shell that uses LYNX,
using Kermits and Z-modem.
In both cases, I can rename those files.
Some CNN news can be named as 1.5.1 or 3.4.2
If I forget to rename them, I can disconect the phone line only by
rebooting the computer.

Upload at my provider is sometimes not done (1 in 6 times) without any
error message. If there are long files to be sent the upload time is
very short and I'll be warned by that.
Otherwise the outbox is not empty and I am warned too.

I snagged ar171sfx.zip from your site Glenn ...

I tried all the included packet drivers & maybe this net card doesn't
like them. Just went to Intel & got their old driver package
[prodos2.exe] ... will try that. Or any other suggestions?

Of course my cable company [Charter Communications] says anything lower
then WIN95 isn't supported ;-)

        later,
                rick
