Ok... so it's a bit OT, but I was e-mailed a form from the
Specialty Coffee Association of America (of which I'm a
member) with a subject starting with URGENT:
I needed to make changes to the e-mail and FAX it back
ASAP. (You've gotta wonder why they require you to fax
back something they e-mailed you, but anyway...)
I didn't have a modem on my machine. I didn't have any
fax software installed, yet I sent a fax within minutes
of deciding to do so.
1) Find the 100K efax software at rpmfind.net (30 seconds),
and download <efax.src.rpm> (2 seconds)
2) Grab the external 33.6 modem off my wife's machine
and plug it into the other serial port on mine.
(camera is already on the first) (20 seconds)
3) Build the package (5 seconds)
(rpm --rebuild --target i686 <efax.package.src>)
4) Install the package (rpm -ivh <efax.package.rpm>
(2 second)
5) make a symlink from /dev/fax to /dev/modem
(which is already a symlink to /dev/ttyS1
(5 seconds)
6) glance at man page
(20 seconds)
7) "fax send 123-456-7890 /home/steve/scaa_directory.txt"
(OOps! Wrong number. Forgot the 1 for long distance)
(30 seconds)
8) "fax send 1-123-456-7890 /home/steve/scaa_directory.txt"
(1 minute : 20 seconds)
efax: 40:25 header:[2003/05/30 12:39 +0 000 000 0000 from a Red Hat Linux system
p. 1/2]
efax: 40:59 sent 20+2156 lines, 34611+21860 bytes, 34 s 13287 bps
efax: 41:02 sent -> /home/steve/scaa_directory.txt.001
efax: 41:03 header:[2003/05/30 12:39 +0 000 000 0000 from a Red Hat Linux system
p. 2/2]
efax: 41:34 sent 20+2156 lines, 20241+28292 bytes, 31 s 12524 bps
efax: 41:39 sent -> /home/steve/scaa_directory.txt.002
efax: 41:40 done, returning 0 (success)
Bam! Simple, streamlined, elegant, no need for mouse or
even Xwindows... all in barely over 5 minutes.
Part of the reason this seems so remarkable to me is that
I remember once *trying* to send a fax from my wife's old
Windows'95 machine. What a pain!!! I must have wasted a
good 45 minutes on it, and never did get that fax sent!
It's actually taken me longer to write this e-mail than
the whole fax process.
Yeah... I love the simplicity and power that is Linux.
... and when is Arachne 2 due out anyway???

It sounds like you have been using a pre-view pane (the default
setting). In IE most people recommend disabling this feature.
Without it there is:- no mail message loaded to begin with; you
can see close to 20 lines at once; and you are less vulnerable to
nasties that might activate when mail is opened.
In addition to CTRL-click try SHIFT-click (click on first line
then SHIFT-click on last line, and all lines will be selected) To
then deselect just one you can CTRL-click on it. >

Yes, you're safer with DOS based stuff.

IE does have a "select all" feature.
Sorry about boring the list with M$ stuff.

Subject: URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL
From: Mr. Mike Okoro (Bank Manager)
Union Bank PLC
Lagos Branch

ALTERNATIVE Email:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Attn:President/CEO
Dear Sir,
I am Mike Okoro , Bank Manager of Union Bank PLC,
Lagos Branch. I got your contact from the World Trade
Center (W.T.C.) Regional office in Lagos, Nigeria
although the details of my intention was not made
known to them. Actually, I listed your name amongst
four other names and prayed over them and God revealed
you to me and I decided to contact you directly.I have
a very urgent and confidential business proposition
for you for our overall mutual interest.
On June 6 1997, an American Oil Consultant/Contractor
with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr.
Barry Kelly made a numbered time (fixed) deposit for
twelve Calendar months, valued at USD$25,000,000.00
(twenty-five million dollars) in my Branch. Upon
maturity, I sent a routine notification to his
forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we
sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his
contract employers, Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation that Mr. Barry Kelly died from an
automobile accident. On further investigation I found
out that he did not leave a WILL and all attempt to
trace his next of kin were fruitless. I therefore made
further investigation and discovered that Mr. Barry
Kelly did not declare any next of kin in all
his official documents, including his bank depositpaperwork.
This sum of USD$25,000,000.00 is still sitting in the
Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the
principal sum at the end of each year. No one will
come forward to claim it. According to Nigerian Law,
at the expiration of 6 (six) years, the money
will revert to the ownership of the Nigeria Government
if nobody applies to claim the funds.
Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a
foreigner to stand in as the next of kin of Mr. Barry
Kelly so that the fruit of this old man labor will not
get into the hands of some corrupt governmentofficials. This is simple;
1) I will like you to provide me immediately with your
full names and address so that the attorney will
prepare the necessary documents and affidavits, which
will put you in place as the next of kin.
2) We shall employ the services of two attorneys for
drafting and notarization of the WILL and obtain the
necessary documents and letter of
probate/administration in your favor for the transfer.
3) A bank account in any part of the world, which you
provide, will then facilitate the transfer of this
money to you as the beneficiary/next of kin of Mr.
Barry Kelly. The money will be paid into your account
for us to share in the ratio of 60% for me and 40% for
you. There is no risk at all as all the paperwork
for this transaction will be done by the attorney and
my position as the Branch Manager guarantees the
successful execution of this transaction. If
you are interested, please reply immediately via thisprivate email address .
Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more
details and relevant documents that will help you
understand. Please observe utmost confidentiality, and
rest assured that this transaction would be most
profitable for both of us because I shall require your
assistance to invest my share in your country.
Awaiting your urgent reply via this email adderess: [EMAIL PROTECTED] please save me
the anxietyof endless waiting.
God bless you.

I have a Nokia 3110 amd James has a 5110 cellphone - both of which
refuse to talk to the computer without the m$ datasuite.
Is there some trick we are missing? The only action I can get out of my
phone through the RS232 cable is to charge the battery! This seems a
rather inefficient use of a computer!

Here's my even simpler method for faxing. Walk out front door,
amble down to the corner and across parking lot to back door
of friend's computer store. Hand fax to friend, get cup of coffee
and cookie and shoot the breeze with friend while he sends out
fax. Total elapsed time: five minutes. Strain on mental resources:
zero. Cost: one dollar per page.
For me to acquire the expertise to apply Steve's method would
take considerably longer. I'm sure that effort would be beneficial
in the long run, but in the short run I get my fax sent and enjoy
a little fresh air. That's simplicity!

Here it would have been $7 ($6 for the initial page, $1
per each additional page), after a some-teen mile drive to
the nearest "office store."
In your shoes, I'd probably do it your way, except
skipping the coffee and cookie.

You could download the binary instead of the src.rpm
thereby cutting out the build step. You could even enter
the phone number correctly the first time, cutting out one
more step. ;-)
The rest... you pick up in no time.

Of course the real point was that Windows makes easy
things difficult... and every once in a while I just have to
rejoice in the fact that I don't live in that frustrating
Windows world. :-)

Hi Steve,
very simple: I have a faxmachine on my desk ;-)
In the early days, using a 286 monocolor computer, I used the faxmachine
as a printer to the computer or as a scanner for images.
I used the DOS program "BITFAX".
Recently I tried this trick again on a pentium but the resolution is
very low. The faxmachine is much faster in scanning in the image, iven
if set to the highest resolution.
Furthermore just one of the five modems I tried was functioning.
Does anyone know if a faxmodem for the computer is a special one?
It must be able to generate the fax tones used for handshaking between
the machines...
PS: I also tried to send a fax in Win95... never succeeded.
Regards, Bastiaan

One of the joys of small town life is being able to walk to
downtown--post office, bank, hardware, computer store, five
and dime, two barbers, four insurance offices, super market.
But no liquor store, no magazines and strangely enough no
place to buy shoes or men's underware.
I thought you liked coffee. Of course the hot, brown liquid
with caffeine that is commonly offered gratis probably wouldn't
qualify for those with educated tastes. I usually skip the cookies
myself.

Amen, brother! And I really do enjoy your posts about the joys of
