Roger: Tried your suggestion. Same thing "Cannot make connection"! Also changed FTPhost to sover.net... same thing. I don't believe that section of the ARACHNE.CFG has anything to do with it since commenting out those lines in A166 does not affect its ability to connect to FTP sites. Since Opera and Netscape (for linux) have no problems with this, I also don't think it could have anything to do with the ISP (sover.net) either. And then Glenn Suggested: >[internet] >HTTPproxy proxy.provider.com:8080 >UseProxy No >HomePage http://home.arachne.cz/ >SearchPage http://www.google.com/search >SearchEngine http://www.google.com/search?q= >FTPusername glennmccorkle >FTPpassword ***** >;FTPhost ftp.provider.com >;"FTPhost" is now obsolete and has been replaced with "FTPserver" >FTPserver ftp.angelfire.com >FTPpath ftp-site.htm >AcceptCharset ISO-8859-1,* >UseBinaryFTP Yes > >BTW, >None of these settings are used for FTP downloads. >They pertain strictly to FTP uploads. > >These are the settings for FTP download. > >[auto-added] >UseFTPproxy Yes >FTPproxy proxy.provider.com:21 > >These settings can be changed on the "Options/Internet settings" setup page. > >If you have an FTPproxy server set on this page.... >Try disabling it by checking the box next to "Don't use FTP proxy server" > >Also.... >Please outline for us in detail... I tried the Options/Internet GUI setup page. The FTP proxy line was blank as was the "Don't use proxy" box. However, clicking it did not cause any changes in the ARACHNE.CFG file. So, although I had already concluded that the FTP sections in the [internet] section had no effect (cf. above), I tried Glenn's settings (adjusted for my userID, password, and ISP) just for the hell of it as well as adding his [auto-added] lines. The major effect this had was that the "Cannot connect" message came up instantaneously rather than after reading the URL and connecting (as indicated by the messages on the bottom left of the screen). However, that usual case (without Glenn's settings) is also very fast (a second or two at most). It's all very mysterious. But as I said, I can always use A166. If someone accidentally stumbles on the explanation, I'd like to know about it, but please don't waste any of your time. Thanks. In the good ol' USA all government spending, to include also all the wasteful government spending, is approved of by the people themselves. In the good ol' USA all government spending must be authorized by Congress, which consists only of representatives elected by the people. In a democracy or in a representative government, the only tyranny that exists is the tyranny of the masses. In a dictatorship only the dictator has the power to be a tyrant. A far better government than a democratic government would be a government administrated by a beneficent dictator. The only problem with establishing beneficent dictatorships is that the world does not know of any beneficent people who want to become dictators. Hi List buddies! Think on this story that I first heard nearly 60 years ago... In ancient times there stood on a highway a statue of a warrior bearing a spear and a shield. One day two travelers met by the statue and noticed how the sun shone on the polished metal of the shield. One said how beautiful was the light reflected from the golden shield, but the other said: That's not golden! It's silver! They argued for some time and were about to draw their swords and fight, when another person approached and asked what the trouble was. The first traveler said: This idiot says the shield is made of silver, when any fool can see it is gold! The second traveler said: Fool indeed! What a fool a man must be who cannot see it is silver! They were about to fight again, when the third person said: Wait! You come over here, and you go over there, so you have changed places. Now look at the shield! The travelers did as they were told and realized that the shield was gold on one side and silver on the other. Thank you, they said to the third person. Thank you for saving us from fighting over such a foolish thing. Pray tell us, what is your name? My name, said the third person, is TRUTH.... - -- Arachne V1.71;UE01, NON-COMMERCIAL copy, http://arachne.cz/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jul 2003 08:28:36 +0930 From: "Greg Mayman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Redraw screen Hi Listers.
