To me, Michael seems to be acting quite paternally sane in not releasing
his codes etc. Would you allow a mob of squabbling children loose at
your bank account? [That may be a slightly awry analogy. Maybe vintage
wine collection, or collection of sports memorabilia would be better!]

Until WE, the users, can work out what we would like Arachne to do, and
write up some sort of plan on how to get there, he would be the safest
person to have the codes in safekeeping.

One facility that I would like incorporated into Arachne is something
like http://www.mail2web.com/ where one can "see" the waiting mail
[whether it be one your current ISP or at another address] and then
choose to delete it BEFORE downloading it to reply. I have had several
300Mb messages sent to me, and with limited space and a slow modem I
have had to shell and delete some programs to make space to download
this mail, only to delete it instantly.

Arachne is ideal for people with small HDD's, and selective download of
mail would be an advantage, IMO. [Heck, I know people who do not even
have 300Mb HDD's, and presume that this size message would just halt
their access to their mail]

Oh, I've brewed to long. I'll just go back into the coffee pot!

Cheers!

Cooee Greg!!!

I was given the task of writing this FAQ sheet for users of the Disability-
orientated Enablenet.

===================================================================
Arachne poses a slight problem accessing Enablenet. It throws an
extra space and semi-colon ( ;) into the COOKIES.LST file. So, in
order to get around that problem, we have to first call up the URL

<1>
http://www.enable.net.au/

<2>
Then, shelling out to DOS [Alt E].

<3>
Call up your editor and open the COOKIES.LST file in the ARACHNE
directory. Then either do a search for ( ;) [without the
brackets] and replace with nothing ()] or look for the
enable.net.au line, and manually remove the extra ( ;) in the
cookie line. WARNING: There may be two or more instances of this!

<4>
Save, and close your editor, and then type EXIT to return to the
Arachne program.

<5>
Call up the above URL again [you should still be there], and go
to LOGIN, and type your login name and password. You should have
no problems getting into the site again during your current
on-line session.

But remember, unfortunately you may have to do this every time
that you first visit Enable.net of each session. But you should
be able to log-in and out without problems during that session.

Good luck! Happy Surfing Arachnoids!

There, that should be simple enough for most people to
understand. [I hope!]

Hopefully this message will show MY e-dress as the source
.. having to use webmail at present on w2k platform has led
to some strange happenings ....

Just wanted to let you know that even if "M$ takes over the
entire world of the internet" they won't own it. I know
(don't ask how) that there is a LARGE international group
out there with a prime goal of circumventing M$
spys/control/access embedded in their software, and these
people ain't slouches!! AND they use their own servers
ranging from teeny tiny to multi-terrabytes multi-processor
ones that would rival my "pro" ISP. Direct connect, keep
the info going and flowing ...

The net is there, the access is there, most of it can't be
traced or stopped, and M$ can't do a damn thing about it.
There's an old saying about how difficult it is to close a
door once it's been opened. I don't think any nation, any
corporation, will ever be able to close the door on the
internet.

Don't bet that the community is that small. <MG> Once
Arachne is released so we can do legit work on it, there can
be more qualified people show up out of the blue. We're not
the only ones who think M$ has an area code of 666 ...

Pretending to go into business as a spammer would be the very
best way to find out how they operate. I did that once with
the world of "mail order opportunities". Quite an education!
What I discovered is that the real money was being made by
the people who serviced this huge sub-culture of "opportunity
seekers" with mailing lists and materials. The prime seller was
books and tapes advising how other people could get into the
business!! Dreamers who want to get rich without effort were
ready to fork over their cash to "experts" who would show them
how to make a killing the easy way. There were tons of people
trying to promote the same cheesy offers such as chain letters
and pyramid schemes. "Hello, my name is Dave Rhodes" began one
infamous chain letter that I once got by the hundreds.

I bet spam is the same way. The "consultants" and "experts" make
money selling CD's of email addresses and how to books to the
great army of clueless dreamers who clog our inboxes with endless
varieties of the same offer. That's where the money is.

So, set up a seperate account and answer all the spam you get and
see what happens over three or four months. You'll start to see
what's going on after awhile. It's not what you think at all.

That's exactly right, L.D. Even in the commercial world there
are many who are ardently anti MS. There's lots of support
there, too.

Many good points, Bob. People are going to find ways to communicate
no matter what.

The need to communicate will engender the technical ability to
communicate. Back before most home users had Internet access there
was Fidonet--an entirely voluntary and worldwide communication
network that functioned quite remarkably. So I think if one
channel gets blocked by proprietary foolishness then other channels
will arise.

The whole thing will continue to mutate, perhaps into multiple
channels--some free, some proprietary. It may not be just one
thing, just one way. But people are going to find ways.

Nothing was done with the Linux version of Arachne after the initial
release. It was never improved or updated. It's dead.

Michael has said that he "is working" on an Arachne version 2.00
which would be entirely new, designed especially for Linux and
perhaps portable to other platforms via what he's called a "flowerpot"
concept. The status of version 2.00 is unknown. My guess is that it
never got out of the planning stage and is probably also dead. I
don't think Michael has the time to program anymore.

The current version of Arachne for DOS is available only at Glenn's
website.

Yes, I can probably write a macro for one of my text editors to do that.
But it would mean shelling out to DOS, or at least calling the editor
from an OOK *every* time to do this.

The strange thing is that Lynx's cookie file doesn't have this problem.

Is it something to do with the way Arachne saves the cookies?

  There are

You ring their help line and ask:
(a) do I need a fixed IP address or is it dynamic?
(b) what DNS name servers do I need?

Have nothing to do with the ISPs who want to send you a floppy with an
automatic setup program.

Agreed! Instead of talking about what is wrong, we should be looking for
ways to get Arachne to work around these problems.

Maybe the security forces want Hotmail insecure so they can access
anyone's email...

Didn't I hear something on the news a month or two back about US
security wanting to access everyone's email?

Just be sure that this is a graphics mode that works for you. If it
isn't you may be locked out of Arachne, and have to rerun "setup" to
restore it to a working situation.

Would you still be able to pick up the online connection after this?

I don't know.
