I'm now going to be a bit simplistic here maybe!

We all agree that Glenn is doing/has done a great job moving arachne on to 1.71 UE
under his own steam? YES!

Michael is too busy to develop either arachne DOS or linux? YES?

We know Glenn has 1.73 up and running and we would all like a copy? MOST LIKELY YES!?

Could we all gather together a list of known e-mail addresses for Michael and if
everyone of us on the list ask Michael nicely,

"Can you authorise Glenn to move on? PLEASE?"

Seems to me it's worth a try! If we ALL do it, to ALL the addresses, at more or less
the same time?

Maybe you should think about getting a new make and model of cell phone.
My Nokia 7160 works like a real external modem, needs no drivers, and it
works with all of my DOS-based internet applications and it works also
with Windows 95 and even with an obsolete hand-held computer running
version 1 of Window$ CE. As an operating system I find Window$ CE almost
good. I wish they would make such a small compact version of Window$
available for old desktops. It would be a great boon for those who like
to do Window$ and who are looking for a version that is almost good.
The only new versions they are finding nowadays are the very bad ones
that are much worse than the version they had.

I have found that browsers have a problem with all of their security
certificates periodically expiring. That is the reason why they can't
negotiate the SSL part when they get old. The browser companies won't
offer a simple patch for updating the security certificates. Instead
they offer only the whole nine yards of their latest and greatest
versions, which include of course the new security certificates.

The reason why JS complaints occur is that many webmasters are in
cahoots with the bloatware browser companies who reward them for
writing so called JavaScript that will work only with bloatware
browsers. If they were to write only kosher JavaScript it would
be digestible by all JavaScript capable browsers. BTW, I have heard
of people successfully suing restaurants for serving meals
advertised on the menu as being kosher and which fail to meet kosher
standards. I wish they would sue webmasters, or at least fire them,
for claiming to write kosher JavaScript which fails to meet the
specified standards.

Yep, one of the best ways to get the lowdown on spammers and
bunko-dealers and bum-steerers and other criminals and terrorists
is to infiltrate their organizations and spy on them. I believe
the law enforcement authorities could have done that and nailed all
the ringleaders of the spamhauses a long time ago if they had ever
had any serious interest in cracking down on them. Without your
even having any prior experience as a top-notch spy, even you
figured out how to infiltrate them. If even you can do that, then
I am sure that there are some highly trained government agent men
and women who can do the same.

Sam Heywood

P.S. BTW, I don't know for a fact whether you have had any prior
experience as a top-notch spy. I don't have a need to know. What
I do know about you is that you have never before mentioned anything
on the list about your having been a spy until just now. Of course
you realize that by doing that you have blown your cover. Did your
agent handler tell you that now is the right time for you to step
out of the shadows and expose all of the spammers and bunko-dealers
and bum-steerers and all those other very shafty and shifty creeps?
Would it have been possible for you to have continued to operate any
longer among the sinister figures of the underworld without their
finding you out to be a spy?

We all wait for the release of the code under GPL. Then, hopefully
Arachne will get its team of developers.

Arachne for Linux looks very promising, at least the GGI version which
is fairly stable. Unfortunately it can't do anything else then http. The
Linux code makes me very confident there will be a 32bit DJGPP Arachne some
day. It's the only way to break the damned 640 kB barrier and to get
rid of the xSwap mechanism.

>From what i've noticed lately, JavaScript is loosing steam. The new
tendency is to use the combination between PHP and SQL in order to generate web
pages dynamicaly. Web designers are now focusing on PHP (server-side)
and tend to forget about JavaScript. CSS are heavily used because they
are pretty comfortable. Unfortunately there are some misguided people
who think that a site entirely written in Flash is the coolest thing on the
web, but these are mostly beginners.

IMO once Arachne GPL'd, the main directions for further developing the code
should be:
1. A better implementation for CSS
2. SSL

Java Script much later

A good way to "see" the waiting mail before downloading it to reply
or even to read it is to access your inbox first by running PINE
from a remote server. Just look at the headers and mark all of your
obvious spams and viruses for deletion, expunge them from your inbox,
and then close PINE and your connection to the remote server. Then
start up Arachne and download the legitimate emails that are remaining
in your inbox. I do this all the time and I do all these things during
the same internet session and over the same TCP/IP connection. This
procedure is very fast and efficient and it allows you to mark and
expunge all your spams and viruses from your inbox in just one fell
swoop. Oh, BTW, I have learned that an item of email that you should
always mark as a virus and not even download and open and read is any
message having a header saying that it is from Micro$oft.

I have a suggestion.

Send a message to the list asking everyone who
wants to remain subscribed to please 're-subscribe'

And then immediately unsubscribe everyone.

Funny, I received a mail from someone who is regularly receiving

Funny, because she had searched for references to the message title

any help in sorting the wheat from the chaff is appreciated.

Hi Jake (and others),

I have 4 addresses. The only one that receives spam is the one used for
the A-list. In most of the spam headers, the A-list is the relay used to
hit me (and all of you, too). Most of those guys are rookies.

Spam is no real big deal for me. I don't read email on line, so I can't
be automatically switched to their site or enrolled in their scheme. I
delete any potentially executable attachments, so that doesn't work
either. All that is left is that silly letter about money in some African
bank. Squashing them only requires hitting the delete key, so they're
just a minor inconvenience.

What is more frustrating is that access to the A-list is easy to control
and most, if not all, of the spam could be prevented with just a few key
strokes.

Subject: Esc = go back (twice?)

Hi List.

I have found an oddity with using the Esc key as a Go Back.

If I am downloading a page which is partially drawn on the screen and I
hit the Esc key *before* the download is finished, I go back two pages,
not one.

For example, I open the Inbox. I open one of the messages which contains
a link. I click on the link, but before it is fully downloaded I realise
it's not one i want right now, so I hit Esc.

This takes me back to the Inbox, not to the previous screen which was
the message i opened.

The only way to avoid this is to move the mouse pointer to the "X"
button and click to stop the download before pressing the Esc key.

Is there some way other than this to go to the previous screen before
the download is finished, as there doesn't seem to be a keystroke to
stop the download?
