Bernie,
I think this second "problem" is the cause of the first....If
your BIOS has no "turbo" option, and you get a "lockup" when the
speed drop occurs (what you described is a form of "lockup")..
then, the chip would seem to have an internal temp sensor, and
it's saving its brains from cooking.......

Pegasus Mail for DOS will properly display each message in a Mime

I hate that HTML stuff too. I don't think a lot of folks who use
email programs with that option are even aware they are sending them.

Pegasus Mail for Win3.x can be configured to start your browser when
you click on a valid link. I thought I remembered FoxMail having that
option/feature also. Am I getting the two confused? Pegasus Mail for
DOS is my main email program for reading/writing and I use Arachne
for SMTP/POP3 transport. I have also been working some with the
Barebones email system by James Chapman as well as a nice
interface program for Barebones by another Arachne list member, Ron
Clarke.

Clarence,
I am at a loss as to what this Reserved item is. Perhaps
it is a result of something windows has set up. Don't know
what, however. Everything seems to be working ok, though.
I fixed the file manager today to set the date correctly,
and have been busy doing that on some other machines.
In Arachne, I start out with Dos memory (KB) 83(+) which
isn't too bad.
I did move share.exe to upper memory, resulting in the
83 dos memory.
You did a wonderful job of reformatting my mem.txt.
I notice some other posts (I'm not alone) have badly
formatted files posted sometimes<g>
I am open to suggestions concerning optimizing Arachne
any way possible.
Thanks,

I think this is correct, make sure your CPU cooling fan is functional!
I just (wks ago) got an AMD400 K6-2 & it doesn't like my early ver. of
WINsnot95 but runs fine in DOS ... my fan is kewl <g>.
If your using WINcrap95/98 you can get a software cooling prog that
helps ... let me know if you need & I'll point you there. Any "Pentium"
class CPU NEEDS cooling with external fan on top! When I first built my
PR90AMD the fan died after a week & I experienced the probs you noticed
... new fan ... no probs.

Glenn,
I sent it, you've probably got it by now....
I never knew there even was a DOS Acrobat reader....learn
something new every day...! I'm still gonna go get
back the reader for my OS2.....it'll handle bigger files
than the DOS one (is that true..? somehow I think that
may not be the case)....but, anyway, having it on both
my preferred systems, will save me from having to switch
in and out, just to read a postscript file....

You are aware of the fact that W95 needs a bugfix to operate correctly on a
AMD K6-2 350 or faster, if not go to http://www.amd.com/ and find it (if
you want to run Win95 that is). Suprisingly AMDs site were much better when
I downloaded this driver back then (a workaround I discovered is to first
start DOS and then run win.com to start Windows 4.x - which also lets you
run the bugfix on the computer something that AMD and M$ has left out)

But I've checked up on the temperature (IO 210h IIRC) and it's always
bellow these extreme temperatures that have been showing at times. And the
fan comes from the same company, so it's actualyl their problem as soon as
I get to the shop with my computer.
As a side note I actually found a fan on a 486DX266 (IIRC) that I recently
took a part. Perhaps I can use it to cool down a litle more (I have no idea
hos to actually make it stick in one position but still it might be worth a
shot, the HDs tend to get rather hot at times...)

Subject: Load EPPPD (anywhere) on COMPAQ
Hello Michael Dawley:
I gather from your postings on the ARACHNE list that you have
your COMPAQ 575 working with Arachne now via Netdial from
the Bobcat package.
I have been following your progress with great interest since I
have a very similar problem with my COMPAQ 590 (presumably the
same machine as yours with a 90 MHz Pentium). The kind folks on
the list have also tried to help me, to no avail.
I have been fooling with the Bobcat package and have connected
my home-cobbled no-name computer that runs Arachne ok. (I had some
problems with running the bcatdial.bat file as a whole for reasons
unknown but after I divided it into dial/pktinstall/runBobcat
sequential segments, it ran ok). Before trying to tie this to
Arachne, I thought I'd try it on the COMPAQ 590 (w. 4PORTS4U
confirmed by several diagnosis programs). It dials ok, connects
to my ISP, epppd seems like it's installing itself, bobcat runs,
but when you try to connect to a URL, Bobcat says "no paket driver".
Soooo - I wonder if you would be so kind and send me copies of
your BOBCAT setup files, and on the off chance that I might get
lucky, the ARACHNE config files that you used. Thanks so much
for your help.

Ok, I didn't actually edit as much as might be needed - I hope you know
what's on every line anyway (and those strange chars are Windows fault -
they look less atrange otherwise <g>).
And before anyone asks - the loss of XMS is due to the fact that SmartDRV
has the maximum it can have in DOS (it's halfed when I start Windows).
Many of the strange items loaded (stacks, lastdriv, wkbuffer etc.) are from
dosmax. (And before anyone says something - I've tried to get Arachne
online without dosmax loaded).
And the RAMDrive is for a minimum one that has a copy of my autoexec.bat
(to boot a little faster) and command.com (to exit programs a little faster).
Another interesting thing is this litle item in your memmory:
EMM386 4,144 (4K) 4,144 (4K) 0 (0K)
while mine is:
EMM386 3,248 (3K) 3,248 (3K) 0 (0K)
Probably due to that you use EMS:
> Total Expanded (EMS) 24,444,928 (23,872K
> Free Expanded (EMS)* 21,643,264 (21,136K
>
> * EMM386 is using XMS memory to simulate EMS memory as needed.
> Free EMS memory may change as free XMS memory changes.
Why are you using EMS instead of XMS?
Do you have like this in config.sys?
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE noems highscan
dos=high,umb
Otherwise change to this, it should give you more free memmory (and XMS
instead of EMS).
And you also wrote:
>I really did not understand how this worked before your explanation.
Perhaps this is an issue we (more experienced users) should be more aware
of? (A small how-to perhaps - or a start of the SURVPC FAQ? Of course what
I wrote is far from anything that might be usefull for someone who doesn't
understand anything. Ah well just a thought).
And why do you run share.exe ? The only time I run this is when I have the
Novell Metwork started... (If you know that you need it let it be,
otherwise "rem it out" and when you find that a program doesn't work
anymore just un-rem the share line and try the program again.)
Also setver.exe is only if you want to fake another DOS version (might be
needed to run ex. xcopy.exe)
Also it's better to put as much as possible in the upper memmory IMO. So if
I could run Arachne I would put EPPPD in the upper memmory by moving
keyb.com down (the keyboard driver for you who don't know) removing dosmax
and moving ctmouse down.
I still think it would be a very good thing if ctmouse and ctmousep could
be added to the Arachne distribution package. How many people even know
that a mouse requires a driver? It wouldn't add much to the total size of
Arachne anyway.
That addition will probably be removed by adding apm.exe and unarj.exe
together - I've saved ca 14K on it sofar (but since it isn't working
properly who cares <g> (I lost the source code and needed to start all over
again, and strangely enough nothing worked directly this time - not even
compiling it as it was).

Bernie,.....if your chip temp is not exceeding specs, but is still
doing the speed backoff (and you have pretty well determined that
this is a "bug" not a "feature") and it is still the company's
responsibility, then I think you are right to take it back...the
chip seems to be "out of tolerance"....sometimes we struggle
and fiddle with something, just because we don't want to admit
defeat, but we really should just give it back to the people
who mal-manufactured it...

The picture is not good, now, but we are back to a bare setup, without
other things loaded on top.....you actually have two problems that
are showing:
(1) your monitor does not seem to have the proper drivers
for your video card, and system display drivers.
(2) when you get a good picture, using DisplayDoctor, the
display drivers block you from connecting with your

Please Michael Dawley, could you send those files to me as well?

Actually I just got a response back from AMD stating:
"This has been fixed. Sorry."
So now the site will work in NS 3.x (I just tried it, but it was a lot
slower now - guess you never can be completly satisfied).

Gee..Bernie.....that looks neat.....please post your config.sys and
autoexec.bat....I wanna get my box to look like that.....<g>,(but
serious, so send them)...

YES..!! let us start a thread...you call it anything you want....I've
just temporarily called it "system optimization".....first topic
is optimize conventional memory.....then we can collect the thread and
post it as an archive, and keep adding topics to it....then we don't
have to be asking ( and answering) the same questions again and again.

But, some or us don't run mouseys....I run alpsey and need my
amouse.com.

Anyway....if we don't start this thread....I still want your config
and autoexec.....I'm gonna tweak my own boxes.....
ADDED thought....there has gotta be a way to load EPPD..high...I
mean, way up....above 1M....it's a driver, right?...so, there
must be some way to get it running up there...
