Hi

Himem.sys depends on the dos version you are using.

Subject: Syntax for SMTPOP.EXE

Here is a quote from SMTPOP.TXT, the documentation file that is provided
with SMTPOP.EXE, by the program's author, Alfredo Cole:

>Syntax is very simple:

>SMTPOP your@address password

>Password is the same password you use to connect to your ISP.

>It has a built in debug feature, and in case of an error, it
>will report the exact cause so that you (and me) can try to
>solve it.

>Please take note that it was not designed to be run from within
>PMAIL. It is best suitable to run it as a batch process to handle
>your outgoing and incoming mail in one bundle.

Here is my report, informing you all about my results:

I enter "smtpop [EMAIL PROTECTED] password" and outgoing mail is
successfully sent, but when SMTPOP attempts to download my incoming
mail, an error is returned:
"-ERR sending password for [EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I enter "smtpop [EMAIL PROTECTED] password" and the same thing
happens.

I enter "smtpop [EMAIL PROTECTED] password" THAT WORKS! It
sends outgoing and downloads incoming.

Perhaps the same type of server addressing scheme would work for anyone
else trying to use SMTPOP.EXE. If anyone tries it, please post your
results.

Please bear in mind that before you can use SMTPOP you must first load
a packet driver and you must have a suitable WATTCP.CFG file.

I used NETDIAL by Marc Ressl, and I used EPPPD, and I used the same
WATTCP.CFG that I use for Bobcat/Lynx.

I hope this information is helpful to someone.

No, the server will not place its own date/time stamp in the header
having the "Date:" line. The server will place its own date/time
stamp on the headers "supra-appending" the headers appearing on the
message itself. (I know that "supra-appending" is not really the
correct term meaning "adding on top of". There was once a discussion

This is very interesting information. Thanks for telling me about
it. I can really have some fun with this feature <g>.

OK, so maybe it doesn't make the transition automatically if you set
the date for Dec 31st, 1999 and leave it running until after midnight.
You can get around a little problem like that by simply entering the
DOS "date" command and then entering the correct date as "01-04-2000".
If your computer will not accept that as a valid date, then you have
a Y2K problem. BTW, I have some early neolithic era computers (8088s)
that will accept 21st century dates!

You can put just about anything you want into the "Date" line of an email
msg. Of course, if your recipient likes to sort msgs by date, he will
appreciate having the correct one.

If you send an email with no "Date:" header line at all, then the smtp
server will insert one with its current date and time.

("Message-ID" is another one like that: you can put anything you want, or
you can leave it out and one of the mail servers that the msg travels
through will insert it.)

Some smtp clients, including Arachne, read the RFC822 header to determine
the recipient addresses that will be passed to the smtp host. Others such
as NetMail, get them from a different source. Both methods seem to get
the job done. What's important is that either way, the msg gets to where
it's supposed to go.

AFAIK it is an integral part of DOS, not separately available.

Different DOS versions actually use it differently. For example, running
MS-DOS on a 386 (or better) you would use both HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE.
But with DR-DOS, you use HIMEM.SYS only on a 286, and EMM386 alone on a
386.

Other memory managers such as QEMM and Netroom substitute their own device
drivers, and you would use neither HIMEM.SYS nor EMM386 with them.

I usually work with virstop or vshield... But you
have a modem and i don't know if the foolowing list
will be usful for you....
anyway i recommend:

http://oak.oakland.edu/simtel.net/msdos/virus-pre.html

(this is a full list of antivirus... you have many
choices :)

i recommend for you: (because i've worked with it and
arachne)
     - Virx299.zip (maybe complicated)
     -vsh-320e.zip (good:only one trouble: memory
                    hungry)
     - Vstop54.zip (Hmmm. maybe a good alternative,
but only detects a little bit of the viruses that you
found today)
     -vste204.zip (good: but you'll need 4dos to
install this!!)

Okis... have fun. Try to find the best tsr that
aplies to you (i cannot recomend one because my
system is no standard and maybe the yours don't work
like the one mine... :(

OK, I have a suggestion:

you can get more upper memory by enabling some more: (in config.sys)

device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems i=b000-b7ff

This also turns EMS off (EMS takes 64KB of upper memory for its frame)

You can also run memmaker to make it think of more memory space for
you (Choose the agressive mode). I don't use MS-DOS that much any
more, but you'll get the idea. :)

IIRC you can enable more but I'm not sure exactly what; my laptop
reckons it needs X=D000-DFFF because of the PCMCIA card.

Two pence worth!

As I sit here at my IBM (yes, a real one!) using Arachne, I have to
point out Arachne is faster than Netscrape on this machine overall, but
not as fast as IE4 or Opera. I suspect this is due to the ISP being
geared to IE4/5 as it's main browser rather than the fact that Netscape
or Arachne are themselves inherently slower.

Netscrape is also incidentally rubbish here at loading teh ISP's home
page, www.freeserve.net and takes fits of stopping the load halfway
through when it hits the photo jpg that the ISP tends to put in and
change regularly.

Don't blame the browser every time, sometimes it's the ISP

Hello All,

Regarding a recent note about SMTPOP.

I had been using SMPTPOP12 for a while, and that worked fine for getting
my mail, but never worked for posting mail. The syntax is different
from that given in the message just posted.

What version is this referring to? Is there a new version?

The version I've used involved an 'account' datafile, and required at
least one parameter like -b. It did NOT work in the form given in the
posting i.e. SMTPOP account@isp password.

I would still like a version of SMTPOP that works in both directions for
my own Mail/News program.

Ditto re News. I still use the GETNEWS program by Martin G. That
works fine for getting news. His POSTNEWS does not work for me, I get
a complaing regarding a missing 'From:' item, regardless of how I try to
present a complete posting. Anyone any thoughts on that?

The cover? I haven't had it on for a long long time now... (might be a
problem since the fan is pushing hot air upwards, otherwise it would be
pushed away and up by it's own heat.

I do have several others: P166MMX, 486DX2-80 (a friend forgot it at my
house two years ago and has finally came around to giving it to me),
486DX2-66, 486SX-66 (note that it isn't a SX2 according to the manufacteror
(sp?)) 386SX-20, 386SX-16.
And that's just in my room (most are even assembled), in the room next to
mine is a P120 and a 486 laptop (I'm hoping my father will remember one of
these days to take a 286 laptop home from work - which BTW was the first
computer I used back in 85).
I've also got an AMIGA 12000 which is rather useless (espacially since I
can't find all the workbench disks, and haven't found any "abondonware"
(latest release of Workbench is from October IIRC) site that lets me
download them in a binary form).

Still what good are these computers when I want to do something with my
main computer? I guess it's time to start cleaning my room - I can't
remember were I left my hub ;)

You're throwing away a lot of money by doing so, it's probably cheaper to
pay for the heating the normal way. Besides it isn't good for the environment.

Sorry, I have no idea on what temperatures you're refering too.
Please try to keep it a little more scientific, so use K or the "new" C
(original C had boiling water at 0 and freezing at 100 - so now you know we
swedes are a little crazy unless you hadn't noticed that I am <VBG>).

Since I'm uncertain if this mailinglist will accept attachments I'll add
them inside the mail (at the bottom).

I don't sugegst that it's automatically run just that it's added and that
the user is notified if he/she doesn't have a mouse driver present.

Now we are going outside the normal 16-bit DOS operation. I doubt there's
an easy way to do it.
Anyway my files (and a few things I would like everyone to read)...

c:\autoexec.bat:

@c:\dos\faster.bat s

And I load my CD with this BATch file:

@lh c:\dos\devload c:\dos\atapi_cd.sys /MSCD001
@LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /S /D:MSCD001

I did notice that devload and/or my atapi driver doesn't load if there
isn't enough free high memmory. (I've changed the settings for SmartDrv
after my original message and now have very little high memmory available -
but on the other hand most things seem to have speed up a bit)
Also the two lines:
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S>nul
C:\SB16\MIXERSET /P /Q>nul
might see a little useless but without these not all games will have sound :(
And ctmouse loads high if it can so there's no need in telling it to do so.

Hope this was usefull... (and if someone sees anything here that might
interfere with Arachnes on-line connection please inform me ASAP).

Oh, does anyone have a ATAPI driver that uses less than the 9 936 bytes
mine does?

Sure, for instance the switch "/TestMem:Off" isn't available on all
(MS-DOS, dunno about the others)

I think any will work. I haven't heard of a .sys file that required any
certain version (but if so it could be fixed with "setver").

>Do any of you know of a download site for HIMEM.SYS?

Nope, try to find complete downloads of DOS if you want it.

Why do you ask? Perhaps someone use less memmory then the other? The hunt
for the almighty free byte in low memmory continues...

And I even wrote you a response (and put it in my out mailbox) anyway you
asked if it would work and I thought my answer shouldn't get completly
wasted...

Probably, but don't bet on it. I have 15K free now since I changed my
bootup files (see my post to the Arachne mailinglist if you want to read
them) but couldn't load ca 10K in the high memmory (and DOS said that 14K
was the biggest hole I had). Might have been because I loaded my cd drivers
through a BATch file (using a program called "devload") and the first free
memmory area that can hold 102 bytes (or whatever this little program adds)
wasn't big enough to also fit the cd driver.
(DOS uses a method called "first-fit" when it chooses the memmory location
IIRC, "worst-fit" would have been the best in this case)

I might wait a while until they don't have any 400MHz left in the store and
ask to get a 450MHz (or faster if that's also out) instead (which is my
right of course).
I bet the people in the store (who I happen to know a little since I've
been there way to many times since they started several years ago) only
will think it's funny when I come in demanding a new CPU since the current
one isn't working.
I can see that they almost start to laugh every time I mention that I want
to know how something works in DOS and/or Win 3.x and/or Linux. It's almost
become bad habits for me to ask even if I know the answer and for them to
answer if I don't ask (often the answer is that they don't know).
Besides I need to figure out were the store is located now (which is the
fourth place they've been - I've of course visited every place since it's
the only *real* store in town).

Please isn't this the extremly last resort? I even tried it once on my
setup (similar to my current but this was more than 5 years ago) and got
less memmory afterwards.
I really can't see how it managed to make such a lousy job since it had
"perfect" config.sys and autoexec.bat files to start with.

Hoody, what happens if you add "highscan" to the emm386 line?

Wow! Isn't that a little large? (I add to mine when I want to use ex.
DJGPP, BCC or TP).
