Have you tried ghostscript? There is still a DOS version of GS 5.10
available (no DOS version of GS 5.50, so it is also disappearing, but the
source is there if you want to compile it...).
Ghostscript 5.1 on this machine (Caldera Linux) reads ".pdf" files. I
believe it will also convert to ".ps".
