Hello, I need help, please.
I bought an old IBM monitor with a screensize of 17" Typenumber 9517. It
works nicely on my also old computer which came with Win98SE. It contains
a driver for this monitor. But it can not show Dos which precedes
Windows during startup and the sadest Arachne is nearly unusable. The
image flickers heavily, is too big and distorted.
I tried all possibilities of the graphics setup. Only Vesa gives an
image at all. Vitezslav said I could try some Univesa driver from
Scitech. I found a SciTechDisplayDoctor SDD53a at Vobis and SDD651 at
AOL. The SDD651 is comfortable to use and gives a very good image of
Arachne and improves the image of Windows (and AOL).
But, and that's it: Arachne can not establish a PPP link any more.
Miniterm dials perfectly, connects with my provider then the screen
shows: "leaving miniterm trying SLIP/PPP" and after a while "no PPP
link".
I posted this question to Quick chat and Gregory Feig told me to clear
out the DisplayDoctor....Arachne works like before.
Technical info.: Video card: miro V22SD-PCI, chip S3 trio 64V+, 2MB
Monitor: IBM homepage-->support-->pc-->search in support-->enter 9517
don't look for monitors.
On the monitor are only a mains switch and two knobs for brightness and
contrast. It has preferred refresh rates of 72, 75 and 88Hz. You can
shift them a bit but 6oHz does not work and I did not dare to go over
90Hz more than a short time. If I remember correctly I got a good Arachne
image with DisplayDoctor at 16Bit colour, 640x480, refreshrate 75,2Hz,
horizontal and vertical syncronisation at "-". This may also be the Win
image and Arachne at 16Bit colour, 800x600, refreshrate 72Hz and both
sync at "-" too.
One thing I remember vaguely the DisplayDoctor does something with 4MB
of memory. I can not check any more because I cleared it out.
What I really need is a way to make Arachne visible on this monitor and
I would like to see DOS too. Win uses only part of the screen but that
is good enough.
I appreciate any help, but please be a bit more detailed since I am a
beginner with computers.
Looking forward
Gerald
