I don't understand. I just now accessed the site with Bobcat/Lynx and
all I could see was a blank white screen. I downloaded the source and
then converted it to text. This is all there is:

I do not know why the page would not render with Bobcat/Lynx. All I
could see was a blank screen. The source appeared to be straight-up
HTML to me. When I attempted to access this site with Arachne, a page
named http://www.cherryroms.com/cgi-bin/cr?page=News automagically
loaded instead. I was very impressed with how fast the page downloaded,
images and all. This is something truly remarkable.

I downloaded the New Deal demo, and it didn't contain any Internet stuff.
New Deal Publish full version was priced at something like $89, and the Internet
stuff was extra. I deleted everything and freed about 10 MB disk space.
I never could determine how functional the Internet stuff was. I imagine
Net-Tamer might be a better deal. I also intend to check out Emacs, for
OS/2 Warp and DOS as well as Linux.

There's a small diffrence. FAT16 doesn't have LFN - it's a work around that
M$ has invented. And IIRC the filenames on CDs are 8.3. But that's beside
the point.
>Thats not a solution.
You are one of the few who thinks that would be usefull. To get the LFN all
someone (probably me in this case <g>) have to do is to recompile wwwman
under DJGPP (which also makes it useless for people running anything less
than a 386). There are of course a few problems with this (IMO the LFN
should be shown but not used - mostly since otherwise DJPEG and other
programs would need to be recompiled under DJGPP (still no luck with that
btw)). And there is another issue as well, the current code is written for
Borland C/C++ not GNU C/C++.

It's what's reserved by default (in MS-DOS anyway) unless you let the
computer actually use it for something (and that's what the emm386 switch
"highscan" does IIRC.
IIRC Someone posted earlier stating that if one has a NIC he/she should
reserve some of that memmory. I must say that I haven't reserved any
memmory on any of my computers that has a NIC and the network (and all
other things except Arachne <g>) has worked without any problem what-so-ever.
Quite frankly using a computer (and MS-DOS most of that time as OS) since
85 still haven't told me what that memmory (if it exist that is) is
reserved for since it never have been any problem for me using it. If
anyone knows (preferly from experience) what it's for I would be very happy
to hear what it is..

This still doesn't explain why I under a normal MS-DOS 6.2 (that is only
using the TSRs that came with it) the free memmory was less after memmaker
had changed.
I saw in a magazine around the same time how to fix a memmory problem one
user had (when playing the latest NHL version for that year). They suggest
he should undo all the changes memmaker had done.
One doesn't have to know much (actually nothing) about memmory to do a
better job than memmaker. The rules are quite simple (once you know them):
Use these in config.sys:
device=c:\dos\himem.sys /TestMem:Off
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems highscan
dos=high,umb
Then just add "lh" before every line that starts a program in autoexec.bat
and change all "device=" to "devicehigh=" in config.sys (without quotes of
course).
Done, and that's much faster then memmaker who reboots a few times.
Granted if you load many (or memmory hungry) TSRs you might need to remove
a few "lh" and/or "devicehigh" to get max memmory free, but that's not that
common anyway. Besides running mem/c tells you what you need to know (as
soon as you know the diffrence between conventional and upper memmory that is).

Hello,
I shall use this subject name because Gregory has baptised it this way.
Arachne + Win NO; NO; NO. Windows is only on this computer because it
came with it and I use it (must) when I want to look into the AOL driver
archive. This all together with Office97 needs incredible 500MB.
My son was here for Xmas holidays and set up this computer so I can
choose Win, Arachne or pure DOS. Arachne has its cache on a RAM disk.
After klick on the cross or alt+x it asks me if I want to keep the saved
cache from last time on my harddisk. It writes the content of the cache
of the actual Arachne-session on the HDD.
The SciTechDisplayDoctor 651 influences at the same time Win and Dos
images. I need only the Dos solution to see Arachne and can read the Dos
text.
If it helps, the computer is a Pentium133 with 32Mb RAM and 1GB HDD.
Thank you for reading.
Gerald
PS: How can I print only say 20 lines out of the digest? With
page-toolbar print-command it prints all the 30Kb.

Exactly. Something like this would do it (add to mime.cfg - only for
off-line use).
file/.ps |@c:\gs\gs.exe $1
Please note that I don't have GS, the actually name/paths might be diffrent
(not to mention were "$1" should be, perhaps it's something weird like "-f
$1" (like tar))
Also this need to be bellow all the "file/.ps*" if you have any.
But what does this do?
file/psprintcom.dgi |print /d:prn _4prt.ps
>Does ANYONE know how to get around the "This program requires Microsoft
>Windows" message and use this thing outside of Windows ?
Sure, there's a file you can download which have the bare minimum that
Windows requires. You then run a program something like: windows.bat
program.exe
So you might be able to use printman.exe (windows.bat printman.exe file.ps)
if you changed so your printer driver is installed. Sorry, I don't have any
URL.
If you have it you and it work then you can add this to mime.cfg
file/winprint.dgi |@c:\smallwin\windows.bat printman.exe c:\arachne\file.ps
And call winprint.dgi via a link in Arachne (you can also put export and
print together if you want).
If you find this please let us know how it works for you.
BTW: This is similar to the way you can do so X in Linux runs a single
program, smaller and faster but not with all functions.

Thats the european standard plug connection for Audio-, RGB-, FBAS- and S-video-
signals of videodevices (a solid 20 pin connector built-in most european PAL-TVs).
Unfortunately mostly unknown in the US.
I think there is no chance for you to fabricate one -but you can try an easy to

No ... it's the switch RAM !!! (or noems)
Highscan makes EMM use a VERY aggressive method to search for additional
memory. (computer may crash, when this switch is used)

Subject: no packet driver found
Hello all,
I am wondering why the file ppp.log is not found on
a computer that has a successful connection to the
internet.
On this computer, a Compudyne, I am using Arachne,
but on my other computer, the COMPAQ 575, I cannot
get past the "no packet driver found" item to connect
to the internet, but CAN locate the file ppp.log.
I wanted to compare the two, and perhaps modify that
file on the COMPAQ 575 to resemble the ppp.log file
on this Compudyne, so that the COMPAQ could read the
IP address set to message from file PPP.LOG as per
the check box in External Dialer setup.

Glenn,
I've been working with this, and now have two .acf profiles for
this installation of Arachne:
- -------------------------------
on one, I use Netdial 1.3 to connect, load epppd into high
memory area, then boot up Arachne 1.50.
- ------------------------------
on the other, a normal Arachne setup, with no Netdial "front
end", epppd is loaded into conventional memory. I can switch
back and forth, but if I disconnect with ALT-H with the Netdial
profile, then I have to ALT-X, and run my batch file to run
Netdial and then go to Arachne. If I use the normal setup,
I can ALT-H when daughter wants to get online with her
computer, and then ALT-D to get back on.
- -----------------------------
While all this is going on, I can go to desktop, tools, memory,
more info, and see where epppd is loaded for the particular
.acf I am using at the time.
- -----------------------------
I keep seeing that "Reserved" section on machines with windows
on it. We have a PS/1 at work with only DOS 6.22 on it, and
there is no reserved section.
- -----------------------------
Arachne shows Dos memory (KB) 103+ on this installation, and
I believe it should be higher. I'll get back here with some
mem.txt files using both .acf's.

Bernie,
I think you have the correct approach to maximizing the use of
conventional and upper memory for the benefit of Arachne. I have
used your formula, and now have 616K free conventional memory on
this computer, and I am able to load epppd high when I use my
Netdial 1.3 before Arachne. I do not yet know the requirements of
Arachne 1.60, soon to be released, but I for one, am getting as
ready as I can in the free conventional memory area.
Also, concerning your post on the "reserved memory", I also
do not know the exact nature of this reserved memory, and I
am beginning to doubt that even if I could reduce this figure to
zero, I would have any more conventional memory for Arachne.
Thanks,

Hi Michael and gangue,
Sounds good V1.60!
I like the idea of a "real" cut and paste in the text area if it can be
done, even more if it would cut and paste between applications as well!
and not just inside Arachne, but I suppose you can't have everything,
not at once anyway.
When Clarence and Bernie have finished I'll have a go at it, they'll

Hi Greg,
A SCART plug and socket are fitted (AFAIK) only to euro tv sets to
enable direct connection of video recorder and camera outputs into the
tv, but NOT at RF levels. Since the connection is direct and does not
involve conversion to/from RF (radio frequency signals) then the quality
of picture is much higher [they say!], I don't notice tooooo much
difference myself.
I am not aware as to whether or not these are fitted to US tv's, but you
would need to check with mainly Philips make, or Grundig or Sony as
these are the principal players in this game here.
I am aware there are a couple of ham radio people on the list here from
the US, they may be able to confirm or otherwise if Scart is a US
standard fitment, but all my records show it is NOT.
It is not possible to retrofit a SCART socket again as far as I know,
mainly because this involves connections within the high voltage area
of the tv, and would thus invalidate guarantee and also safety standards.

Here is the correct url for the China-Red Flag Linux story.
Sorry for my previous post with the incomplete
link in it. I should have used Arachne, and have
this handled right the first time.<g>

Hi Michael;
As long as you have the necessary re-direction arrows in your Arachne.cfg
e.g.:
Connection @epppd.exe>>PPP.LOG
- ----
Dialer @MINITERM.EXE>>PPP.LOG
(and if you are NOT using the terminal window)
TerminalWindow @MINITERM.EXE>>PPP.LOG
then PPP.log will be generated.
But Arachne DELETES it when you exit so you have to shell out and save it
before exit - or view it with the view log files utility.

Still my wish.

Thanks, Bernie;
That sounds like it might be worth some effort. I will take a look for such
a thing - I DO think I saw something at simtelnet about running W31 without
a GUI.

Michael, take a look at Ricisi's post and try changing "HIGHSCAN" to "RAM"

Hi Gerald;
If you can get the message on the screen in text mode (F6 might do it)
try the printscreen button. Just an idea - haven't tried it.
