And noems means no ems ;) and use UMBs
RAM means EMS _AND_ UMB
So IMHO this is correct.

It does seem to me that some portions of the manual, especially the portion
describing how to use FDISK, might not have been upgraded from the manual for
DOS 3.30.
Under the subject heading "What's New" I find the following:
"Performance improvements. Several internal enhancements and a new command,
fastopen, improve MS-DOS performance, especially with applications that use
many files.
Support for 1.44 megabyte, 3 1/2 inch disks.
Support for four serial (COM) ports. Previous versions of MS-DOS supported
two.
Enhancements to config.sys commands, including buffers, stacks, device.
MS-DOS 3.30 [ sic., typo?] also includes a new config.sys command, country.
Ability to use partititions larger than 32 megabytes. You can create
extended partitions larger than 32 mega-bytes with fdisk.
Improved national language support. MS-DOS 3.3 [sic., typo?] offers the
ability to to select alternate language-specific character sets (called
code pages) instead of the standard U.S, character set. Three new commands-
chcp, nlsfunc, and select, and several enhanced MS-DOS commands, including
keyb and mode support code page selection. In addition the config.sys
command, country, and two installable deveice drivers allow you to select
language-specific code pages.
Enhanced batch processing capapbilities.
Ability to make a system disk formatted by an earlier version of MS-DOS
bootable with MS-DOS 3.3 [sic., typo?]. This is possible because MS-DOS
3.3 [sic., typo?] allows the io.sys system file to be non-contiguous on the
disk.
Various enhancements to existing commands, including
append
attrib
backup
date
format
graphics
keyboard
mode
restore
time"
>From the above quoted information, it appears that some of the above refers
to what's new in MS-DOS 3.3, and some paragraphs refer to what's new in
MS-DOS 3.31. Some differences remain quite unclear.

Oh, well I've always used both of them (noems and highscan) this is IMHO a
good practice.

This is of course depending on your view. IMO You should drop the /L: part
when you're loading setver. The FCBS might be a little high as well (since
they are mostly used for really old programs IIRC). Some here will argue
about the buffers and files statments beeing to large, quite frankly I have
no idea if these are any good (nor if mine are) <g>. Others on this list
can probably inform us on which is best suited for them.
But what I also would do is increase the lastdrive statment. But that's
might be since I like to use SUBST if I need an easy way to reach two
diffrent directories on the same partition (ex. "subst u: k:\prog" (T is my
first free drive - but I've always liked U for some reason)). Also usefull
if you have a network and need to map another computers HD/CD.
You could also put command.com on a RAMDrive and use that one as your shell
(requires changes to autoexce.bat) this way smartdrv doesn't need to
remember that specific file which comes up from time to time. Of course
with low memmory this is probably a bad thing to do.

Subject: Printing from Arachne under DOS thru Windows (phew =)
Hello.
**NOTE** this message just expresses what I think/believe - not
neccesarily facts =) so please correct me if I'm wrong somewhere-
Re: using Windows software to print under DOS:
I just don't think you can run them/it under plain DOS. Think about it -
Win uses tons of DLLs, internal system calls, and other weird stuff. Some
stuff requires special initialisation etc (as in *drivers*, like, printer
drivers). Others may use Win32s - which of course means MORE APIs to
support.
That doesn't mean there doesn't exist simple programs that could just as
well have been DOS programs - those who don't use anything Windows except
the EXE header. BUT, they are very rare, as people tend to put in stuff in
programs that aren't plain DOS calls (ie. windows/DLL calls/etc etc).
Of course you could run a Windows program under DOS - if you could make it
"self-contained", ie. it does it's stuff without the Win kernel, that is,
includes a kernel inside itself, includes all DLLs, has a DOS EXE header
(not a Windows one), und so weiter till no end.
So, I think usage of PRINTMAN is (at least almost) impossible under DOS,
unless you want to REWRITE it. But, if you rewrite it, why not write a
plain printer driver instead of Yet Another Windows Emulator which
includes a PRINTMAN and lots of drivers for every known printer?
To keep this at least a BIT on topic....:
With all this said, why not make an Arachne printer driver
interface? Michael? (that is, unless running PS through GS is a better
(386+) solution...=)

Subject: Secure web sites
Hello:
Could anyone please refer me to a web site that would explain the
theory involved in the establishment of a so-called "secure web-site"
or a "secure link" to a web site?
As most of us surely know, a "secure" web site is used to place on-line
orders and to transmit over the internet some sensitive data, such as
a credit card number. Surely there would be very little security if
such data were transmitted in the clear.
I do not understand how I could encrypt my credit card number, transmit
the encrypted number, and then have the recipient to decrypt the number
unless the recipient had a compatible decryption engine and had
knowledge of the original encryption key (i.e the password or pass
phrase that I use to encrypt the data). It would seem that somehow
this kind of thing is what would have to happen when using a "secure"
web site. How does this kind of "magic" work?
If no one knows of a web site that explains how this system works,
is there some one out there who can explain in a nutshell how this
system is supposed to work?

I would certainly suppose so. A higher version of DOS should be able
to do anything a lower version can do. A few exceptions might be
noted in some cases.

I think I've seen them there. Why would they have them when "no on

cables & hubs and cases and etc etc etc to run a network of any sort,
parallel or serial or ... and when you run net servers you often are
breaking open cases -- so you'd like to have a way to open case without
grabbing nut/screw drivers.
No warranty that they have them, however.

Update on the above:
I found it at: http://www.phys.uu.nl/~faber/Windows_No_GUI/
I have made some initial tests and thought I should post this note to help
anyone headed the same way. I downloaded the Win311.zip and my first
comment is that this version was designed for Win for workgroups.
No matter. If you want to try it with Win311 just ignore his references to
all files required EXCEPT win386.exe.
Using his system.ini as a template only, create your own new system.ini by
extracting ONLY the [386enhan] section of your EXISTING system.ini. There may
be portions of this you can delete - I removed all references to comports.
Remember to save your existing system.ini AND make a copy of krnl386.exe too.
I re-wrote his batch file to make the necessary automatic name changes and file
copies on entry/exit so I could use my existing files.
The first test worked well. I got windows to take me to a dos prompt.<g>
The second test worked FAIRLY well. I got printmanager to load and exit
without crying about the lack of windows.<G>
The third test is now working as I'm in Netscape writing this so I haven't
trashed my windows setup.<VBG>
The next thing is to find out how to pass the required file information to
printmanager.
Any more ideas out there ?
