Jan,
WordPerfect (WPDOS) 6.x looks a lot like Windoze, so much so that although I
have it on my computer, I use it only when absolutely necessary, e.g., when I
have to convert a Word document (WinWord) for use in WordPerfect. My word
processor of choice is WPDOS 5.1, but I don't think that you will find it
available for free unless someone is willing to give it to you. (Maybe
almost free, though!) When I got WP 6.0, I passed up the opportunity of
getting WP 5.1 Plus. 5.1 Plus handles the graphics fonts (software) fonts
much like 6.x does, but hopefully doesn't have the Windoze type interface.
There is a used computer/software store in the neighborhood of my office that
I stop in about once a month that has good buys on used software. Desqview
386 for $5.00, FoxPro 2.6 for $20.00, etc.
As Clarence said, there are a lot of editors available that perform almost
like a word processor. You might want to check the Simtel's (www.simtel.net)
and Garbo's (www.uwasa.fi/~ts/garbo.html) MSDOS ftp sites and look in their
"Editors" and "WordPerfect" sections. On Simtel's site, select DOS, then
browse. The screen that you get are the sections on Simtel's site. Click on
"E" (for editor) and you will get all the text editor files; click on "W"
for WordPerfect and you will get all the WordPerfect files. On Garbo's site,
select MS-DOS, and the list starting with "pc/" are the sections on Garbo's
site. Garbo only has an "Editor" section, not a WordPerfect section.
(Of course, if you are into or going into Linux, you can download WordPerfect
for Linux from Corel's site for free! It might take all night, but it's
free!)
Hope this helps.

Basically a an ASCII text Editor. I remember using Wordstar 2000 on my
Dad's old 8088 about 12 years ago. Good program, is there any place
where you can get it for free?
I also remember there was a DOS version of Wordperfect that looked
almost like the Win 3.1 version (WP 5.x or 6.x ??).
What I need this program for is writing essays on my old 386, VGA
monochrome display, 4MB Toshiba notebook (which I got for free from the
company I worked for, coz the wanted to trash it :-)))), and then
exporting them to Win - based Word to add the graphics and final layout.
I already checked the Simtel page and other download pages but was a
little overwhelmed by the vast amount of software available. So I
decided to ask for your experiences.
