In Great Britain and in the American Colonies prior to 1751, New Year's
Day was celebrated on March 24th.  (i.e March 24th, 1749 would be
followed by March 25th 1750)  The good old days were cool!  In 1751
the Brits decided to apply a major correction to their calendar.
