gregy,
I'm surprised! Before the rewrite of the pages on Egghead, I would
sometimes have to set Arachne to *not* download images or else Arachne
would lock up. Now I don't have that problem at all, have no trouble
getting pages down with 14.4bps modem, etc. I can see all the pages,
except for the shmtl stuff they've written for shopping cart & actual
purchase. But as long as they have an 800# I'm in fine shape.
Dunno where the problem you have originates, but I'd say it wasn't at
Egghead's server or site.

Sometimes, sites can be busy for 3-5 hours. That is, when the US is awake
and surfing hte nets. =) (or the people in Asia)
And, as I live in Sweden, I have (like others on this list) learned that
backbones CAN go down. It's NOt fun to try surfing here then, sometimes
not even the FIRST steps of a connection are performed....=/

True, it's a filesystem in a filesystem. But it's SLOW. UNSAFE. Etc. I
wouldn't recommend it. A simpler virtual FS might be used for ARachne,
tho, it needn't be as complex as UMSDOS.

Clarence,
To get a bunch of HTTP URLs noninteractively, as you want to do with graphs of
stocks' recent activity, there is HTGET (DOS) and wget (OS/2 Warp and Unix).
You could put a bunch of HTGET commands in a .BAT file:
HTGET (URL) > file-to-save-to

I mean bootable disk, Ram disk driver and self extracting archive

And call it , lets see...... .....pocketArachne ?
Everybody want to have it, but nobody want to do it.
( I'm bad programmer (only Perl, and thats enough),
so don't rely on me). I can fit it only on Zip100 ;)
>
Using 1.44 floppies, you might have one DOS diskette and another diskette
with Arachne zipped. COMMAND.COM could be copied to a RAMDRIVE. But with
Zip100, you have much more space. If the Zip100 is bootable (ATAPI?), you
could put DOS & Arachne on a Zip100 with plenty room to spare. You might still
want to use a RAMDRIVE because of Arachne's intense disk activity ("Give the
hard drive a hard drive").
Under the same nominal subject, because of a bug in DOS,
copy /b 1.ps prn is better than
type 1.ps > prn
type 1.ps > prn will stop if there is an ASCII 26 character in 1.ps and print
the incomplete file. TYPE is for straight-text files. COPY with /b works on
any kind of file, including plain text. I can't see why the developers of DOS
ever thought a user would want a file destined for the printer to be truncated
at an ASCII 26.

Hi
I just wanted to test the speed of the new arachne ... so here we go:
(cache empty)
TUWien Homepage was chosen, because it has 2 frames, some images, and can be
reached EXTREMELY fast from my internet connection.
http://www.tuwien.ac.at
Arachne 1.60: 4 sec.
Arachne 1.50: 15 sec.
Netscape 4.7: 3 sec.
www.microsoft.com ;)
Arachne 1.60: 5 sec.
Arachne 1.50: 20 sec.
Netscape 4.7: 4 sec.
So the new WATTCP version and Michael's optimizations really helped !!
Do the others have compareable results. (arachne 1.60 being MUCH faster than
1.50 ??)

Subject: Possible fix for Video Setup
Hello Michael, All;
The problem I found with video setup is twofold:
1) As can be seen from this copy of SETUP.bat, setup calls core.exe.
This is bad news because core eventually switches to graphic mode
and does this BEFORE the graphic mode has been set.
and
2) if there are any OTHER problems with core (wait for it <g>)
the user is stuck in graphics mode with no way out.
There IS another problem with core, to be discussed after this copy,
but first I would like to suggest that the ENTIRE setup.bat be run
from DOS in text mode with a fancier batch file..
@echo off
if (%1)==(os) goto setup_os
if exist arachne.cfg goto setup_gr
copy 386pc.acf arachne.cfg
:setup
core -s
if errorlevel 32 goto end
del history.lst
:setup_os
arachne.bat reload:file:setup_os.dgi
goto end
:setup_gr
core -s
if errorlevel 32 goto end
del history.lst
arachne.bat setup.htm
:end
It would be nice to know what the errorlevel returns are for core so we
could re-write this batch file.
The other problem with core is an interface problem. It appears that
the pointy-clicky guys at Arachne Labs never tested the keyboard interface.
I'll bet 10bucks that they don't even know there IS a keyboard interface -
only Michael knows.
On my P~100 with DOS 6.22 I found the following - and this is NOT likely
a list of all occurrences of the problem:
As previously posted, on the video setup screen Arachne refused to accept
my "ENTER" on the "Test selected Video Mode" button, and would not TAB to
links past TSENG ET4000.
Also found on the OPTIONS page, pressing the "Preferences" button caused it
to stick down and the "Use New Settings" button does not work.
On the PREFERENCES page, NONE of the "radio buttons" on the RIGHT half of the
screen worked, and TAB would not move the cursor past the "off" box in the
"Fixed System Font" section.
Most importantly, NEITHER the "Save" OR "Cancel" buttons worked. Luckily,
"ESC" did work and I have it set to "BACK". (Screensaver Preview faulty also)
I believe this is the same problem I experienced with not being able to get
out of Video Setup.

Subject: Fix found for SHELL to DOS
Hello Michael, All;
The inability to use altE to shell to DOS when using DOS 3.3 is an error in
MIME.cfg. Why it works with DOS6.22 I don't know and it's irrelevant anyway.
In MIME.cfg the line:
file/dosshell.dgi |@call $e\\system\\dgi\\dosshell.bat $e
Should be:
file/dosshell.dgi |@call $esystem\\dgi\\dosshell.bat $e
A quick check in mime.cfg revealed no other errors involving $esystem.
No guarantees about other dgi calls tho.

Hello All;
I found that the EGA video setup worked on my '386 system at home and I tried
V1.61b online. A trip to "X" which I thought was going to be the old Arachne
Home page took me instead to Arachne Labs.
My connection is 33600 and this page took about 4 minutes to load. (3:56)
Considering the long load time and the MOST unappealing content, I don't
know why anyone would ever go there twice.
I much prefer the newspaper style layout of the homepage to which we had all
become accustomed.
Just so my post isn't all negative, I tried the editor and email and they both
are much improved by the cursor focus on "textarea" and the screen response to
keyboard activity is MUCH faster. You tend to notice that on a 20Mhz '386. <g>

Hi Richard;

Any good luck you had was due to using:

Subject: More bugs in 1.6b1
Hi Michael, All;
I'm REALLY sorry about this.
Further tests with this new version finds it to be pretty much unusable for me.
I wanted to test the speed of this one v.s. 1.5b2 so I went online and went
to the OLD Arachne homepage. I DIDN'T use "X".
Load time with my 33MHz '486 @33600 was 31 sec. Not bad at all !
Since I had tested egghead.com yesterday with 1.50b2 I went there.
Load time of main page 56 Sec with 1.6b1 - was 50 Sec with 1.5b2 ! Hmmmmm.
Here's the bugs:
1)After 1.6 finshed it's adjustments, it wrote the screen at max size
regardless of my selection with F5.
2)When I tried to select "Computer Products" for a second time test as I had
done yesterday, Arachne ignored me. I couldn't select any links.
3)When I then went offline, Arachne corrected the display size and showed my
status line and small icons.

Hi Mark;
This sort of thing has happened to me when some Windows using m*r*n tries
to send me the contents of his harddisk.
The best thing to do is call them and try to talk to a human.
Ask them to delete that big file.

Same here. Everything went fine.
I got the .exe version via eMail and the .zip version via http download.
Both of them installed "without a hitch".
Did the .zip install to c:\arachne\

"Export" also failed here. (but did not "hang")
It simply brought-up the "Save or send unviewable file" screen.
This one is easy to fix. Just add this line to mime.cfg

Using my P~100 and DOS 6.22 with 640x480 VGA (there are 7 monitors here on 6

I find that the following functions produce unexpected results:
On the Dialler Page if I select ACF profiles and then select one of the defaults,
Arachne rewrites my .cfg file and goes to: No Network Interface Available.
One skull. There should be some warning. I just wanted to VIEW it.
Also, if I attempt to select an .acf at the bottom of the list it doesn't work.
On the Dialler Page if I select ASF scripts and then select asf_help.asf, I
get the document but I can't get off the page. The "back" function doesn't
work and "ESC" doesn't work. It has erased the history list !
I CAN go forward. i.e. I can go to "Desktop" via F10 or anywhere else a hotkey

On the Dialler Page the buttons "PPP setup" and "PPP wizard" don't work.
"EXIT now", on the same line, does work.
In email, buttons "Address Book" and "Make Mailing List" produce no action.

I'm glad you finally got on with your "Everything works fine here" message. <VBG>

If they refuse to delete it or charge pay (as my ISP do), you can
do it manualy rather easily. You will need a Telnet application for
this. Connect to your POP3 mailserver on port 110
(in your case, pop.hotpop.com:110 ) and login with the following
procedure (replace the word username and password with your username
and password when following this.):
user username
pass password
list
dele nn
quit
Thats the end of the procedure. "list" will list all the messages
you have. The format should be: <message number> <filesize>
For example:
1 1432
2 3224
3 946
replace the "nn" in "dele" with the number of the message you want
to delete. For example, if its message number 3, then: dele 3
Be advised that the message will only be deleted after you quit.
If just you disconnect the telnet instead of using the quit command,
the message will _not_ be deleted. (its a safety thing against
having the message deleted by accident while getting your mail).
Also, unless you'll have "local echo" enabled, you would not see
what you type.. not really important, anyway. But still should know
that. :)
Other usefull commands if you want to know: "retr nn" read message,
"noop" No Operator - let you about a minute or so of no keyboard
input before disconnecting you instead of 20 seconds as usuall..
Have fun.

This was the same for me in 1.50 as well, and it still behaves this
way. So IMHO it's not a new "bug". And the history list isn't erased is
it? I think you can't just go backwards. This should be fixed, but hey
for apparent reasons I don't complain at anything now ;)

They do for me...
I think something must have gone wrong with your installation - what did
you do to get it like this? I unziped the .zip file and then ran arachne.bat and
voila I was on the Net (after a few easy questions which I knew the answers to after
all my earlier attempts.
I suppose the .exe file would have worked fine as well, but who knows?
