Subject: Fw: Maximum for cached items = 255?

- ----- Forwarded message begin -----
From: "Hans-Juergen Bardenhagen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi Arachne Fan Club,

can someone confirm that Arachne's WWW cache can't store more than
255 items? I just tried some offline surfing with some pages I visited -
but no sign of them in the cache. This number 255 seems familiar to
me... %-)

OK, one hour later: Perhaps I should read my own tips now and then - hit
the "Reload button" and everything's gonna be alright! Well, not quite,
because 255 really seems to be the maximum number of cached items. But
now I have at least the latest visited pages available - Arachne must have
deleted some older documents from the cache to enable this.

By the way, can someone read me here...over? This is Hans-Juergen speaking,
trying to reach this list with his internet mail account...over... ;-)

ZZee ya... (don't know where, don't know when...)
Hans-Juergen
- --
This is for you, Glenn... ;-)) Writing this mail the first time, I was
able to add an extra blank space at the end of the line, but storing the
mail in "outbox" and reopening it later deleted the space.

- ------ Forwarded message end ------

OK - this test obviously didn't make it to the list, because I probably
would have to subscribe again with my internet e-mail account, even if
I only want to *write* to this list from there and read it as usual
(from my BBS server) - right? ;-)

Hello guys,

Sorry for using M$OE ;-) but I've just discovered that it is compatible with
Arachne. I saved an message recieved with OE onto a diskette, and then
successfully read it in Arachne. Likevise I saved an Arachne message onto a
diskette, renamed it to *.EML (that's *.CNM in Arachne :-), and from "This
Computer" Windows identified it as an "Outlook Express e-mail" file.

So, it seems to be possible to move messages back and forth between those
two. Just give it a proper extension. :-)

Yes, Samuel, I am seeing the same thing. With 1.50src I have [150]+
(green) before dialing. After connecting to home.arachne.cz (no
images) it shows [81]+ (still green). With 1.60b1 it shows [128]+
(green) but after connecting to home.arachne.cz (no images) it shows
[104]?. I find this strange and think it must be a bug. Michael's
color scheme for this memory display is green (very good), black
(ok), and red (bad, crash near), IIRC.

I don't think so, and BTW: if there is no graphics mode compatible with
CORE.EXE, Arachne is anyway useless on such PC...

They are _all_ used in arachne.bat, so I think it's kind of
self-documentation.

Didn't I say that I rewrote LOT of things inside CORE.EXE this time ?

Yes - althought it meant, that I had to learn Vitex how to write stable
programs ;-) And I tolld him to do the install using DGI scripting, much
like user friendly Linux distributions launch Xfree86 in VGA mode or
Windows launch temselves in VGA mode.

(but the VGA setup screen is my work...)

I haven't tested with virtual screens turned off... it exports just
virtual screens, nothing else. I should add some verification if virtual
screens are present.

Yes, these two were simple.

Don't worry. It is debugging info on memory manager, something like
QEMM dumps when it hangs ;-) Arachne should print it when "illegal
xSwap operation" occurs too....

It is documented in file XSWAP.TXT , but if you are not realy crazy,
you won't be interested in analyzing it.

Yes - but how vvarious INBOXes shoul be reached ?

I think I wil l add different type of filtering, eg. option to create
inbox.dgi page only from e-mail with (or without) "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
in header...

Please wait for beta 2 or beta 3.... I commented it out in the

They are not yet ready for beta testing.

Yes, but it is still not perfect. I want Arachne to be faster than
Netscape 4.7, because Mozilla (future Netscape 5.0) is reported to
be much faster, even faster than MSIE 5.0 (which is pretty fast, to be
true...)

The new autoinstaller has nothing in common with the old one. I agree
that the Turbovision installer was confuing and very often unfunctional.

This may be caused by random differences in net speed. Have you tried to
compare page load times when loading just from disk ?

Sorry, the new POP3 enhacments are also not yet ready. But first thing
I am planning to add is maximum size of message to download. Such
messages will be skipped - useful eg. for portable device. There will
be also configurable maximum number of messages to download.

But it should! Maybe your video card doesn't support text output in
graphics mode.

Yes, it surprising. It seems, that for Glenn, Arachne works ALWAYS, even
when it is buggy release. For you, nothing ever works ok, even when it
works for me at home. But in fact, you told that EGA works for you in
1.60 beta 1 - for me, Arachne in this mode just hangs ;-)

Keyboard-only navigation works for me, in all the cases described by

I just setuped by graphics mode only with keyboard, and I went through
all possible options with tab; I also went to "preview screensaver"
button with Tab, etc.

Yes, Arachne now offers floppy mail exchage, if you are OFFLINE.

But this happens inside DOS batch file , not inside Arachne....

It is not in Insight, it is external/pop3 and external/smtp, which
is used when you are offline. Some user asked for floppy e-mail
exchange...

It worked, obviously.

And it works also with Autodial set Yes (Setup PPP button on dial page).
You can easily comment external/pop3 and external/smtp, which is used
by Arachne in offline mode. Just comment them out from MIME.CFG

Oops... Sorry. I wasn't very clear there. Save the file with the

Then open the file in your favourite browser. It will displays the page

Sure ... just an idea ... I _DO_ have a DHCP server here, and I'm supposed to

That is strange, because I had the same problem

Definitely o.k. in 1.60 beta 1
(unless you have changed the design of the page...)

I'm having a heck of a time with the new buttons, particularly in
InSight.

They work fine ... that's not the problem.

My problem is that the print is TOO BIG.

That shouldn't make any sense, until you remember that the human eye
works by scanning, and searches for shapes.

The problem, after studying it, is that the font on the buttons got
bigger but the buttons stayed the same size. That means there is less
margin around the printed words. And it doesn't help that the font is
so "skinny" either.

And that, BION, means the words are harder to read.

I like the san serif font, but I like being able to process the data
mentally a lot better.

Hey, Mr. xChaos!! Can you use a slightly smaller font on those InSight
buttons, or at least make it a little "thicker" ???

Subject: Dos Memory Needed by Arachne 1.60

Hello all,
I installed Arachne 1.60 beta on this Compaq in just a few
minutes. In Arachne 1.50 I had Dos Memory (KB) 148, now in
Arachne 1.60 beta I have Dos Memory (KB) 127, indicating that
the new version requires 31 more KB.
I had been preparing for that, trying to optimize my conventional
memory, and loading epppd high. As a result, I have 615 KB of
free conventional memory for Arachne, and now going to test the
newfound speed, etc. of Arachne 1.60.
I have the 800x600 version, and the load time and clock do not
conflict as they do on my PS/1 with the 640x480 setup.
So far everything seems normal, and I was impressed with the
speed of installation, just a few minutes.
Thanks,
Michael L. Dawley
Pearl, Mississppi
ps: I am still using my Netdial 1.3-Arachne combination...

Hi Eric;
ESC didn't work here.

Dale, Sam;

This + ? ! business is Michael's concession to wierdos like me that use
monochrome.

Since I can't see the colors, I think the sequence is:
+ Arachne has found enough XMS space to allocate 2 buffers,
? Arachne has found space for 1 buffer,
! Bad news, Arachne can't find enough XMS for any buffers. (Will use disk)
The number is, I believe, the excess amount or spare.
If anyone really wants to know for sure, it was posted about 8-10 months ago.
